Design an information leaflet for a Gurdwara aimed at somebody your own age. Explain what the Gurdwara is like, how to behave in a Gurdwaraand why it is an important place for Sikhs.

1Describe the Building

  • The EkOnkar sign and what it means
  • The Nishan Sahib and what it symbolises
  • The porch, the Prayer Hall (Divan), the Langar

2Explain some key beliefs

  • The Mool Mantra
  • The Guru Granth Sahib – what it is, how it is treated and why it is important
  • The Langar– what it is and why it is important

3A code of conduct for guests to show respect

  • Take shoes off
  • Cover head
  • Bringing food or money
  • Not pointing feet to the Guru Granth Sahib
  • All sitting on the floor

  • Advice on how to live

Level 3 /
  • Describe some Sikh beliefs using some religious words
e.g. Sikhs believe that everyone is equal because that is what Guru Nanak taught.
Level 4 /
  • Explain what Sikhs believe using some key religious words
  • Make links between what Sikhs believe and how they live
e.g. Sikhs follow the teachings of Guru Nanak and believe that all people are equal and so when they go to the Gurdwara they all sit on the floor together.
Level 5 /
  • Explain in more detail what Sikhs believe using a wide range of key religious words
  • Explain how Sikh beliefs influence their actions, giving reasons and examples
e.g. Sikhs follow the teachings of Guru Nanak and believe that all people are equal and so when they go to the Gurdwara they all sit on the floor together. This shows that nobody is more important than anyone else. They also show their respect to the Guru Granth Sahib by facing it at all times and covering their heads in the Gurdwara.
Level 6 /
  • Explain clearly how Sikh beliefs and teachings influence the way they live, using reasons, examples and religious and philosophical language
  • Show that I have thought about Sikh beliefs and teachings for myself, for example giving my own opinion on why Sikhs carry out different actions.
