Ravali Island Description:

  • Ravali Island is situated in the Pacific Ocean and is 22 kilometres across at its widest point.
  • Most of the island is covered in tropical bush, though coconut palms grow around the two villages Rima, on the north coast by the mouth of the river Vai’l, and Lopu, on the south coast.
  • The only link between the two villages is a track cut through the bush.
  • The River Vai’l flows from a lake near the centre of the island. On the eastern shore of the lake is a boathouse. The western shore is swampy.
  • A lighthouse has been built on the west coast to warn ships away from the dangerous rocks off that coast.
  • During the Second World War the American’s built an airfield on the east side of the island for military purposes. Now it is only used to fly tourists who stay at the hotel nearby.
  • The only road on the island links the airfield to the only town, Aparia, on the north-western coast of the island.
