Year 5Curriculum Letter Spring2nd Half Term 2014-15

Dear parents,

Welcome back to school for the second half of the Spring term, as we lead up to the joyful celebrations of Easter. I hope you are all managing to stick to your Lent promises!

Our whole-school theme for this term is “The World Around Us” and our SEAL theme is “Good To Be Me”. Should you wish to buy a copy for your child to bring into school, our class story this term will be “Stormbreaker” by Anthony Horowitz, an exciting tale of spying and adventure. Our faith value for this term is “Thankfulness”. For our class topic, we will continue to study the country of Greece, focussing on modern as well as ancient Greece and how the life in the country has changed since ancient times.

Friday 13th March – Mothers’ Day church service, 9.15am

Monday 16th March – Open classrooms, 3.20pm

Thursday 19th March – Parent’s meeting on handwriting, 6pm

Thursday 2nd April – Easter service, 9am

Thursday 2nd April – School finishes, break up at 1.30pm

Children are due back into school on Monday 20th April, following the Easter holiday.

Please ensure your child has a replenished pencil case for this half term, and that painting shirts and PE kits are in school at all times!As always, if you have any questions about your child’s learning or about anything else, please don’t hesitate to ask!

An overview of learning in Year 5, Spring2nd Half Term, 2014-15

Understanding English, Communication and languages
(Speaking & Listening, Reading, Writing, MfL) / Mathematical Understanding / Religious Education
- fiction writing based on our class text, “Stormbreaker” by Anthony Horowitz.
- non-fiction texts, including reports writing and biographies.
- grammar, handwriting an spellings will continue to be taught explicitly on Fridays, and daily within whole class sessions, small group work and individually
- French, taught weekly by Mr Potter / The children will to be taught a variety of maths skills in the areas of:
- understanding numbers, including place value, sequences and rounding, negative and decimal numbers
- adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing using formal methods
- using and applying number and calculation knowledge to solve problems and puzzles
- reading and understanding graphs / RE is taught by Mrs Archbold. Our value for this term is Thankfulness. The children will be learning about the events of Holy Week and will be taught about the solemn and joyful aspects of the Easter story. Our focus on other faiths will see the children comparing aspects of the Easter story to the story of Passover, important in the Jewish faith.
Scientific and Technological Understanding
(Science, Design & Technology) / Historical, Geographical and Social Understanding
(PSHE, History, Geography) / Computing
In science this term, we will continue to learn about the changing of materials, including mixing, separating, dissolving and evaporating. We will test the properties of materials to discover which materials are suitable for which jobs on account of their properties. / History and geography fall within our study of the European nation of Greece.We will continue to learn about the lives of ancient Greeks, but will expand our studies to learn more about the modern Greek state, and ask what is similar and what is different about Greece since ancient times. / For our Computing unit this term, we will continue to studythe use of database software to help understand how data is stored and retrieved in information systems. We will build our own databases to store simple sets of data.
Understanding physical development, health and wellbeing.
(Physical Education, Personal and Economic Wellbeing) / Understanding the Arts
(Art and Design, Music, Drama, Dance)
Games will take place every Tuesday afternoon with Mr Macey. Gym will take place on Mondays, led by Mr Potter. / Art and Design
Our art and design work this term will be to design and make a pair of Greek sandals / Music
The children will continue to learn the ukulele as well as working on elements from Music Express.
