Homework will be given out on a Thursday and returned no later than the following Tuesday. Spelling tests will be on a Thursday. In Year 3 children should spend about 30 minutes on their weekly homework.

Helping your child

Reading

It is important that your child reads every day.

Reading a variety of texts will also support your child with their writing.

You can support your child with their reading by listening to your child read, reading with them and reading to them. Follow-up reading sessions by asking your child questions about the text they have just read.

Our Library day is Tuesday. Children are encouraged to bring their book to change in every week.

Maths

Please regularly review times tables with your child.

It is useful to help children relate Mathematics to real life, for example money and problem solving. Children can also log on and access mathletics and carry out mental maths online.

Children also have access to their USO where they can log on and access programmes online for example espresso.

For Years 2 and 6: Testing

Year 2 and Year 6 will have their SATs in May. There will be ongoing tests throughout the year where your child’s progressed is tracked and support is put into place to support your child.

For other Year groups: Assessment

Children’s progress is closely monitored and their levels of attainment are informed throughout the academic year by on-going teacher assessments. The performance descriptorsare regularly moderated and discussed twice a term at Pupil Progress Meetings where individual targets are set and reviewed. Children will also carry out termly maths and reading tests. Children will be assessed for their writing through an independent creative piece of writing.

School Trips

School trips will be booked to support and further the children’s interest in our current topics. We have a few ideas currently lined up and will provide more information as soon as possible.

Toileting

Children are encouraged to go at break times and lunch times. There is a 2 minute warning to remind children that play time is finishing.

This should be worn with a grey skirt or trousers. Children should wear black shoes – no trainers. Please make sure that your child wears suitable footwear for school. Slip-on shoes, strap sandals or shoes with smooth soles may all cause accidents.Long hair should always be tied back throughout the school day.

We regularly do uniform checks including checks on shoes. If your child is not wearing the correct uniform we will contact you. If there is a reason for your child having to wear alternative clothing for a period of time please inform Ms Rodriguez.

PE kit

Year 3 PE is on a Wednesday afternoon.

Kit needed: navy blue shorts/joggers, white t-shirt, plimsolls, blue sweater (for outside). Football shirts are not part of the school’s PE kit. Earrings should not be worn. Long hair must be tied back. If a child forgets their PE kits Ms Rodriguez will be in contact.

Absence and punctuality

For children to achieve their full potential it is essential that they attend school regularly and on time.

The school uses an electronic register system and this enables us to quickly see who is absent or late and contact parents/carers as necessary.

If your child is going to be absent or late please contact the school office as soon as possible.

Each week classes with the highest attendance receive the Attendance Cup. Children who have 98% or more attendance can win the Club 98 prize. Those who are never late can win the Early Bird prize.

Please refer to the school’s Attendance Policy for more information.

Parent / carer and teacher communication

If a parent/carer has a concern or needs to speak confidentially with the teacher he / she should make an appointment to see them.It is not appropriate for sensitive and confidential issues to be discussed in the playground.
