Practical Activities

Use class clock and individual clocks ‘Show Me’ activities, ‘This is …. o’clock, now show me the time 15 minutes earlier/later.’ ‘What is the next hour?’ ‘This time is ten past six. What will the time be in four hours?’

Make some cards with word problems on them (see examples below) – encourage individuals to read and solve.

Use individual clocks; practice telling the time e.g. 9 o’clock, five past nine, ten past nine, quarter past nine …

Use a minute timer/stop watch; record how many words the pupil can write, how many numbers they can write, how many jumps/hops they can make etc – encourage estimates to be made first.

Oral practice for quick recall of facts.

Knuckles for Jan, Feb etc. : bumps for 31 days, hollows for less than 31!

Share the poem – ‘30 days has September …’

Revise days of the week, seasons etc.

Use calendars to solve word problems. For example: ‘Judy visits the dentist on Friday 3rd December. She has to return two weeks later. What will the date be?’

Encourage pupils to split times down into short, easy stages. For example 20. above 9:15 to 9:45 (30 minutes) then to 9:50 (5 minutes more, giving a total of 35 minutes).

Use Bus/Train Timetables, TV/Radio Times to ask questions.
