Year 4 Assembly – Science Experiments

Solids & Liquids

CHILD 1 Welcome to year 4 assembly. Our assembly is about solids and liquids. We hope you will enjoy it.

CHILD 2Solids are hard materials, which do not change their shape and size like a duster, a wooden block, a TV or a computer.

CHILD 3Liquids are not hard, as solids and they do not have a fixed shape or size like water, coke, juice and milk.

CHILD 1We did a lot of experiments in our class and found that.

CHILD 4When we pour solids from one container to another, they do not change their shape.

(Chn. will use different shape containers)

CHILD 5Child 6 to hold a container with a marker in it, Child 5 to hold an empty

CHILD 6 container and when Child 4 will speak, Child 6 will show the container with marker to the audience and then tChild 11fer the marker into Child 5’s container and then Child 5 will show her container with marker, to the audience from the stage.

CHILD 7But when we pour liquids from one container to another, they change their shape.

CHILD 8Child 8 to hold a container with a black current juice in it and will

CHILD 9show it to the audience pointing to the level of juice and then pour into Child 9’s empty container. Child 9 will show his container to the audience, which is now showing a different level of the juice.

CHILD 10And we also found that when we mix some solids, (waits for the demonstration)

CHILD 11, Child 11ford will show a bag of sand, Child 13 will show a bag of wooden cubes

CHILD 12,and Child 12 will show a bag of paper clips to the audience. They will put all the

CHILD 13solids one by one in Child 14’s tray and Child 11ford will mix them with a spoon.

CHILD 14

(Child 13 will give the empty bag to Child 15 and Child 12 to Child 16.)

Child 14 to stay there with the tray, others will go back to their positions.

CHILD 10we can separate them using different equipments such as magnet and our hands.

(Child 15Child 16 to show their equipments to the audience.)

CHILD 15We can separate wooden cubes with our hands because these cubes are big and easy to pick. (will pick out wooden cubes from the mixture and show to the audience)

CHILD 16We can use magnet to separate paper clips from sand because magnet attracts metal objects.

(will pick out paper clips using a magnet and show to the audience)

CHILD 17After that, we investigated if we can mix and separate solids and liquids. We added rice in water. We stirred the mixture and noticed that we can still see rice and water clearly which means we can separate them using a sieve. (Shows the poster)

CHILD 18Then, we added salt in water and stirred. This time, we observed that after some time, we couldn’t see the salt. It disappeared. But where could it go? (Shows the poster)

CHILD 19We knew that it was somewhere in the container, the only thing was, we couldn’t see it. So we tasted the solution.

CHILD 20Ahhh! It tasted salty. The salt had dissolved in the water.

(Shows the poster)

CHILD 21We concluded that some solids like rice and sand could be separated from liquids whereas some solids like sugar and salt cannot because they dissolve in liquids.
