Year 11 Summer Assignment Name: ______
Year 11 Summer Assignment – Preparation for AS Applied Science
Prior to starting you’re A-level Applied Science course in September you will be required to complete several tasks to enable you to have the best possible preparation to tackle the upcoming material.
Task One
- You should spend about 30-45 minutes on this task. Using a range of resources (Internet, Yellow pages, Thompson local directory etc.) identify five organisations in the Dorset area that use Science in some way in their day to day work. You must ensure that the organisations that you choose are definitely using science. A good way to decide would be to try to concentrate on organisations that need at least one member of staff with scientific qualifications beyond GCSE.
- Using the local organisation summary sheet to record the following information.
- The name of the organisation;
- The address of the organisation;
- Whether they are a manufacturer (making a product) or a service provider (doing jobs for others);
- How they use science – give a description of the type of work they do and/or the scientific processes they use;
- The source of your information (give the full web address if you used the internet).
Task Two
- This work should take about 30-45 minutes. You will design an experiment using equipment commonly found your kitchen to investigate how much baking powder will react with 50ml of vinegar. When baking powder is added to the vinegar it will release carbon dioxide gas and fizz because a chemical reaction is occurring(ensure you research safety precautions before carrying out the experiment). How will you know that the reaction has finished?
- Use the attached pro forma to present your experimental write up. You will need to include;
- An aim
- A method (include equipment needed, quantities of chemicals used and any safety precautions)
- A preliminary results table that could be used to record your results
- A list of references (what sources did you use; books, class/revision notes, internet).
EXTENSION – If you have the equipment needed you may want to carry out the experiment. If you do you can include the following on your work.
- A conclusion (including a scientific explanation of what happened, chemical equation etc.)
- An evaluation (when carrying out your experiment, did you have to modify what you did? If you had access to better equipment what would you use and how would it have made a difference?)
Task Three
- This task should take around 30 minutes.Complete the table of key words and their definitions.
Most of this work will be tested in the progress test within the first few weeks of the course.
It is essential that these tasks are completed prior to your first lesson in September and you will be required to bring this work to thefirst lesson.
