Year 1 Term 3 Topic Overview “To Infinity and Beyond” January-February 2017

English: This term we will be reading a range of poems, information books and stories(Aliens Love Underpants and Whatever Next) We will be writing our own stories based on stories we have read together and thinking about how we can make our writing longer and more interesting. The information books we will be sharing will be topic based and we will be learning about the moon landing and the planets. We will be learning new graphemes for reading and spelling and continue to learn to read and spell tricky words and high frequency words. / Science:In science this term we will be looking at seasonal change. We will be using simple equipment to observe first-hand the changes in Spring, as well as using our class weather tree to discuss the other seasons. We will be looking at the rotation of the Earth to consider why these changes occur across the seasons. / Maths:
This term we will be identifying odd and even numbers, and ordering these numbers. We will be solving money problems by adding and subtracting amounts up to 20p. We will belearning to recognise and name 2-D and 3-D shapes as well as recognise the difference between 2-D and 3-D shapes. We will also be carrying out some simple multiplication and division
Computing:
In computing this term we will be learning about E-safety and how to use the internet and search engines safely. We will look at various websites that will inform us about our space topic.
We will be copying, pasting, resizing and formatting images. We will also be typing text, resizing, changing colour, printing and saving our work. /

/ Art/DT:
This term we will be making underpants for an alien. We will be choosing appropriate materials to match our designs and considering how we can develop our designs to contain more detail. We will also be designing our own rockets, ensuring that we include key features of a rocket. We will be using computers to create text and images to decorate our rockets.
P.S.H.E & Citizenship Education:
This term we will be looking at our school community, including jobs and roles that can be carried out around the classroom, and recapping our Golden Rules.
We will also be looking at our local community, including the role of key individuals in the school and those from outside the school who help us. / History:
In History this term we will be looking at: the first man in space, ‘One small step for man one giant leap for mankind’ - Neil Armstrong;Environmental differences Moon/Space and here; and what is happening in space now. We will look at real life footage of events and use google earth to look at satellite images.
Music:
In Music this term we will be learning lots of different space songs! We will learn the words in each song, and look for topic words relevant to space. We will also choose instruments to use in each song, and play these with good control. / P.E:
Gymnastics: Children will continue to use the apparatus. They will be working on body shapes, jumping, balancing and rolling. They will be creating their own sequences.
R.E:
In RE this term we will be reading bible stories. These will include stories from the old testament. We will discuss the themes of the stories such as forgiveness, friendship, sharing, trust and love and consider how these themes are relevant in our own lives. We will express our opinions on these themes and select our favourite bible story. / Additional Information:
