The whole of Year 1 have had the opportunity to build a fire at our fire circle, light it and toast marshmallows. Delicious! They also had stories around the fire, finally putting it out and drawing pictures with the charcoal, once it had cooled. The fire pit day is a wonderful experience, and one the children talk about with great enthusiasm. We have also been creating a time line to gain an understanding of how time passes, and to begin understanding how long ago events happened in history. We are going to continue adding pictures to our time line to help children learn about when important events actually happened.

We have been learning about poetic narratives, and have enjoyed listening to a range of poems. We have used text maps to recite poetry, and the children created their own text maps to write their own poems. We have been learning to use adjectives and similies to up-level our sentences in our poems. The children continue to re-read what they have written to check that it makes sense. We have been learning when to use full stops, and to use a capital letter after a full stop.

In Phonics we are working on segmenting and blending words when reading and spelling. We are continuing to review some of the trigraphs (3 letters making one sound) and digraphs (2 letters making one sound) that we learnt in Year R. Please keep practising these when you are at home. During our phonics session we make sure the children are forming their letters correctly, including the ascenders and descenders.

We have continued learning to multiply and divide, using a range of equipment to work out our calculations before writing them down. We have been investigating fractions of shapes and numbers, working on whole, half and quarter. We have been exploring whole and half turns. We have been naming 3D shapes and describing their properties using mathematical language: faces, edges and vertices.

At home you could:

  • Practise reading and spelling the words on our Year 1 word list.
  • Find 3D shapes in our local environment, eg a lamp post is a cylinder; a cereal box is a cuboid.
  • Investigate an historical event that interests you. Draw a picture/write a caption. We can add it to out time line.
