Year 1 addition and subtraction


Year 1 performance descriptor: solve one-step problems that involve addition and subtraction, using concrete objects and pictorial representations, and missing number problems such as 7 = - 9.

Notes and guidance (non-statutory): They discuss and solve problems in familiar practical contexts, including using quantities. Problems should include the terms put together, add, altogether, total, take away, distance between, more than and less than, so that pupils develop the concept of addition and subtraction and are enabled to use these operations flexibly.

This work shows the range of activities leading to the child meeting the performance descriptor.

  • Represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20

Examples of number bonds work.

As a class we practise our number bonds mentally on a daily basis. Miriam could then demonstrate that she could recall her number bonds to 10independently and apply them to record subtraction equivalent sentences. She could also verbally say that she can use her number bonds to work out more difficult problems.
  • Read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition (+), subtraction (-) and equals (=) signs

Miriam then developed her understanding by working out how to complete missing number sentences. When an adult discussed the work involved Miriam could identify where they had made a mistake and could correct it demonstrating her knowledge.
Miriam took her understanding of number bonds and the concept of addition and subtraction and applied it to show that she could demonstrate that they are the inverse of each other.

As Miriam developed a greater understanding of addition and subtraction she could then apply it to simple word problems where she had to work out which calculation was needed and record the number sentence to show their understanding.

As Miriambecame more confident she could identify pairs of numbers that could help her solve more challenging sums when adding 3 one digit numbers together.

  • Add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including zero

In order to extend Miriam’s knowledge she used diennes to represent digits when moving onto 2 digit numbers. She confidently could demonstrate what the number is made up of using both diennes and a whiteboard. During this activity Miriam explored the effect of adding 0 to two digit numbers and could explain that the number does not change.

In order to apply their knowledge of 2 digit numbers the children rolled a dice to choose their number and added 10. They started by counting on and using a number line. They began to notice a pattern – the units do not change, but the tens change by 1. They also recorded their number sentences.
They then practised their counting in 10’s from any given number: 2, 12, 22, 32, 42, 52, 62, 72, 82, 92,102!
Miriam was able to make a link between all previous learning to be able to add a multiple of 10 to either a one-digit or two-digit number.

Applying understanding

Ellie was given a range of one step word problems.

Miriam was able to write her own word problem – when you add an odd number to an even number what do you get? She was then able to show her workings out to solve the problem and give a solution.
