WELCOME

Welcome! You have come to hear the Word of God, and you shall hear it read and preached. But we hope that by hearing it, you will also meet the Word of God, the Living Word, Jesus, our Master and Savior. And we pray that you will leave our church equipped to serve him more faithfully and effectively.

SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY

July 13, 2014

PRELUDE “Holy Spirit, Truth Divine” arr. Hegarty

PRAYER HYMN “Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart” 326

Spirit of God, descend upon my heart;

Wean it from earth, through allits pulses move;

Stoop to my weakness, mighty as Thou art,

And make me love Thee as I ought to love.

WE COME TO WORSHIP GOD

CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader:We worship the God who inhabits our world

and indwells our lives.
People: We need not look up to find God; we need only look around:

within ourselves, beyond ourselves, into the eyes of another.
Leader: We need not listen for distant thunder to find God;

we need only listen to the music of life, the words of children,

the questions of the curious, the rhythm of a heartbeat.
People: Let us worship the God who inhabits our world

and who indwells our lives.

*HYMN “Come, Thou Almighty King” 139

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Merciful God, as your children, we long to grow to spiritual maturity, and to be weaned from the elementary teachings of our faith. We desire to live as disciples who can be entrusted with the full measure of the gospel. We confess that we often avoid such growth. We prefer the simplicity of childhood rather than the complex tensions of adulthood. We would rather remain comfortable than embrace the pain of change. We pretend that complacency and maintaining the status quo is something other than slow death. Forgive us, Lord. Renew within us the desire and commitment to be fully alive to you, to ourselves and to one another as faithful and mature followers of Christ. Amen.

SILENT PRAYER

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

*GIVE GLORY TO GOD “Glory Be to the Father” 577

Glory be to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,

World without end. Amen.

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,

World without end. Amen.

Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Pg. 534 Psalm 119:105-112

105Your word is a lamp to my feet

and a light to my path.

106 I have sworn an oath and confirmed it,

to observe your righteous ordinances.

107 I am severely afflicted;

give me life, O Lord, according to your word.

108 Accept my offerings of praise, O Lord,

and teach me your ordinances.

109 I hold my life in my hand continually,

but I do not forget your law.

110 The wicked have laid a snare for me,

but I do not stray from your precepts.

111 Your decrees are my heritage forever;

they are the joy of my heart.

112 I incline my heart to perform your statutes

forever, to the end.

A TIME WITH CHILDREN “Clothed in Christ” Rev. Jean Pinto

NEW TESTAMENT LESSON Pgs. 982-983 Romans 8:1-11

8 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spiritof life in Christ Jesus has set youfree from the law of sin and of death. 3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and to deal with sin,he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 so that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spiritset their minds on the things of the Spirit.

6 To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law—indeed it cannot, 8 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

9 But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit,since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christfrom the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also throughhis Spirit that dwells in you.

SERMON “Spirit Description” Rev. Jean Pinto

WE RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH—The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and earth. And in Jesus

Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
