  7. What is the trend for ionization energy? Explain why this trend behaves as it does?

Ionization energy increases going up a group and across a period from left to right. The more electronegative an element is, the closer it can pull electrons. In addition, the smaller the radius of the atom, the closer the electrons are to the nucleus. This proximity results in an increased positive/negative attraction. It will take more energy to overcome these Coulombic attractions. Therefore, where the radius is small, the ionization energy is high.
