SEPTEMBER 2010 YTC KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE

X-1 Probe Switch Box Cover

From an email dated 02-09-2010:
Hello Bob, my name is Jose Hernandez, I've been detecting since 1974. I currently use a Minelab Etrac with a Sun Ray Target Probe. My reason for this email is to share an accessory I had made to protect the expensive Sun Ray Probe. I live in Oregon and everyone knows it rainsquite a bit. I had my neighbor make a custom cover for my detectorand I'd like to sharewith other detecting folks who use a Minelab Detector with a Sun Ray Probe.
This is made of Sports Nylon with a plastic liner sewn into the inside, it secures with Velcro and elastic and will keep you electronic probe box clean and dry. It is professionally made (looks good) and beats wrapping plastic around the box to keep it dry. Will work for left or right swing. I've included some pictures of it.
The cost of the cover is $17.00 shipping included in the USA. If any of your members are interested they can email me at
Thanks
Jose Hernandez

RAIN DUST COVERS

Matt Dakin talked about a purchase he made from EBay seller treasure_placew ho offers rain and dust covers for Minelab Explorers, Etracs, along with some models for White’s, Garrett, and Fisher detectors. Not only do these cover the display, but there is a cover for the battery compartment. An extra flap provides good protection where the head phone jack is. Price as of September 2010 is $18.99 for the Minelab covers plus USPS shipping. (around $3.00 to CT)

No Metal Combat Boots

Matt Dakin talked about Metal detecting foorwear that has no metal in their construction. He searched military, rescue, law enforcement, public safety websites catering to associated gear. has the Altama boots her purchased. Please note, some sites list these boots as metal free which is not totally true. There are no metal eyelets for the shoe laces to run through which is where most “falsing” comes from related to foot wear. However, a portion of the zipper pull is metal. (the zipper length is nylon) You have to really angle the search coil at your ankle to detect it, so not an issue. Matt is very satisfied with his purchase.

Here is the link to these specific Altama boots. I purchased for $53.99 + $11.77 S=H, current price online is $59.99.

EXcelerator SEF “butterfly” search coil

Dave Gregorski talked about his 12X15” SEF coil during the September 2010 YTC Knowledge Exchange. KellyCo is the exclusive US distributer of the EXcelerator SEF “butterfly” search coils, which has continued to grow in popularity. It is available for the Minelab Explorer, as well as other Minelab, Teknetics, White’s, and Fisher brand detectors. The unique design has impressed Dave and others in the club. It has incredible separation, excellent depth, easy pinpointing and creates very little “noise” which allows for high sensitivity settings. Dave hit many “cleaned” out sites and found many a new target. Prices vary between sizes and brands, so it’s best to check out the EXcelerator search coil page at KellyCo.

Keeping Your Digging Tools Sharp

Ken Gudernatch brought in a hand held power drill with a sanding wheel attached as well as a metal file he uses to keep his digging tools sharp. Not only is it important to keep them sharp to facilitate the easy recovery of targets, it also helps you dig less damaging holes. This is very important while detecting on private property as even the slightest blemish could cause your permission to be retracted. Ken uses a low grit sanding disc to get started, and fine tunes the sharpening with a hand held metal file. These items can be found at any hardware store.
