This lesson will demonstrate the reactions of WWII and 9/11 and allow the students to reflect on the various aspects of war and how it relates to them.

  • The U.S. was fighting two wars abroad.
  • Every American had to sacrifice during WWII through rationing, buying war bonds, or military service

  • Draw inferences from the sources and use them in their writing
  • Explain the different roles individuals, both military and civilian, took in the defense of NYC.

Learning Activities:
  • Activity 1-
Students will be given a Do Now – What makes NYC as important as a military target? Why would an enemy of the U. S. seek to attack NYC over other American cities?
  • Activity 2-
Discussion -10 minutes- on a prompt “Nature of the Enemy.” How would we prepare differently when fighting wars with entire nations than those with small terrorist cells?
Display the images Mickey Mouse Gas Mask and Air Raid Instructions and ask “What do these images tell us about American attitudes during WWII?
  • Activity 3-
Mini-lesson- 5 minutes- Project image of New York Times headline and ask what it signifies.
  • Activity 4
Students read Secondary Source and answer questions.
  • Exit Slip- Given what we have discussed about NYC’s war effort, explain what you would have done to help protect the U.S. using examples from the readings.
