WWALTM (What We Are Learning This Month) December 2017 Team 6

Ms. Adams / Math: We will be finishing up the Patterns & Relations Unit. We are starting the decimal unit; saying decimal numbers, representing decimal numbers, adding/subtracting/multiplying and dividing of decimal numbers.
PIF: We will be continuing our work on the “Robot” unit; discussing daily routines. We are focusing a lot on reading this month, creating awareness of sounds.
Mrs. Anderson / LA- In Writer’s Workshop, we will continue to explore persuasive writing. In reader’s workshop, students will continue to practice reading strategies during Read to Self and conferencing sessions. A mini-unit on inferencing will also be introduced. Students are asked to please read every night for at least 20 minutes.
Social Studies-Students continue the unit on “Environment and Culture.” They will examine and compare environmental features in different physical regions of the world. Students will then consider and assess the complicated relationship between environment and culture in a selected region of the world.
Mr. MacNeil / Students will be finishing their unit on “Electricity” and starting a unit on “Flight.”
Mlle Brideau & Mllle Connors / Math: We will be finishing up the ‘’order of operations’’ unit. We will start the tables of values and graphs and tables unit.
FILA: We are focusing on how to create a good sentence. The position of certain words. We are also continuing to build our vocabulary. We are also working on reading strategies and comprehension. We are going to start sending French books home. The students are asked to read for about 10 – 15 minutes every night.
PIF: We will be continuing our work on the “Robot” Unit. We are discussingdaily routines. We will start to read a little more during this unit and keep building our vocabulary.
Science: Students will begin exploring the Scientific method by asking questions, making hypotheses, and following through with the steps of an experiment. They will also be wrapping up the unit on “Living Things”. Students will show what they have learned by completing a research project on a living being (plant/animal/fungus).
Social Studies: Students will be exploring the concept of family and community culture and its influence its place in Canada's cultural mosaic
Mrs. Moore / Language Arts- Students will continue to practice inferring with various types of texts and will begin a poetry unit.
Mr. Brewer / Students will be introduced to the fast growing game of pickle ball and will also be playing soccer games.
Ms. Hanscomb / Health – Students will begin a unit on the importance of nutrition and physical activity and will identify how media is used to influence our health choices.
Mr. Pomeroy / Health– Students will investigate common types of accidents in their community and focus on how those accidents could have been prevented. Students will also look at environmental factors that affect their health.
Mrs. Sark / Students have been working on animal actions family names in Wolastoqey. Will continue with our identity unit and beading. Evan will be in to teach drumming and Possesom will be in to teach dancing.
Ms.Turley / Support Ms. Adams for math.
Grade 6 Team Activities / During pyramid periods, our team is focusing on literacy skills. We are honing in on building vocabulary until Christmas. After Christmas, we will spend the next 3 weeks focusing on numeracy skills. We pre-test the students to place them into their groups.

Mrs. Moore / Language Arts- Students will continue to work on reading engagement, stamina and inferring skills. Poetry will also be explored through reading and writing.
Science- Students have started a unit on Mixtures and Solutions where different phases of matter and various types of solutions will be examined through hands on explorations, video and written work in class.
Ms. Turley / Math: We are working on Fractions: adding/subtracting, changing to a decimal, and percent.
Science: We are continuing our work with the Earth’s crust then switching over to pure substances and mixtures.
Mrs. Carlisle / LA: We are working on developing character traits when writing a narrative story. We will continue to work on paragraphing and conclusions. We will also begin persuasive writing this month. The students will continue to practice using reading strategies for understanding.
PIF: We are working on a unit about strange phenomena and this will help the students learn descriptive words while talking and writing in French. We are practicing reading strategies with the books in this unit.
Mr. MacNeil / Students will be studying about “Economic Security.”
Mme. Vail / FILA- Students are continuing to work on the “We Are Canadian” unit. They are reading, listening to and writing informative texts about Canada.Students are asked to please read in French every night for at least 20 minutes.
Social Studies – We will continue to explore “Economic Empowerment”.
M. Hogan / Math: We are working on Fractions: adding/subtracting, changing to a decimal, and percent.
Sciences: Finishing ecosystems and beginning scientific method.
PIF: Working on French Box Projects about themselves and their family.

Mrs. Hanscomb / Health - Students will investigate the negative effects of drugs and alcohol. They will learn and practice the skills to refuse drugs and alcohol and deal with peer pressure. We will also look at the media’s impact on choices regarding healthy/unhealthy behavior.
Mr. Pomeroy / Health – Students will investigate the roles of people in our community that promote health and safety. Students will also take a form of action to promote health and safety at our school.
Ms. Sark / Students have been working on the Family and Kinship unit in Wolastoqey. We will continue the identity unit as well as beading. Evan will be in to teach drumming and Possesom will be in to teach dancing.

Mr. Drillen / Math – We will start a unit on Perfect Squares, Square Roots, and Pythagorean Theorem.
Science – We will complete the unit on Tissues, Organs, and Systems of the body, focusing on organs, organ systems, and testable questions.
Mrs. Muise / LA-Students are wrapping up their persuasive writing unit and we will be starting a short stories unit. Students are encouraged to read nightly.
SS-We will be working on studying the culture of Atlantic Canada.
M. Hogan / Math: Continuing unit on perfect squares and Pythagorean Theorem.
Science: Scientific method.
Mrs. Thomson / PIF- “Une revue pour ados, par ados” (Magazine for teens, by teens) unit will be introduced. The final project of creating individual magazines will be due late January/ early February. We will use a variety of magazines articles and samples to help with their creation.
SS-We will be working on studying the culture of Atlantic Canada.
Mme Vail / FILA – We will continue to work on our “Canada, Our Heritage” unit. Students are finishing up their brochures on “Une site historique” and will be presenting these. Students are asked to please read in French every night for at least 20 minutes.

PIF – We have started a new unit on “Extreme Sports”.
LA – In reading, we are continuing to practice reading strategies to find meaning in non-fictional and fictional articles. Students are encouraged to read nightly.
