OVERVIEW:

Housing and Residence Life is in the midst of some exciting developments that will impact our students and campus alike. We are a group of dedicated educators and administrators who take on our charge for creating a residential campus as a living laboratory with both excitement and thoughtful consideration. With a dedicated President, academic partners and dynamic division that recognize the benefit of a strong student life program, Housing and Residence Life is moving quickly to firmly establish the residential environment as a catalyst for the student experience. Housing and Residence Life is focused on providing a safe, inclusive, and enriching living environment to approximately 5,500 students.

POSITION TITLE:Graduate Assistant, Leadership Development

REPORTS TO:Housing and Residence Life Associate Director, Residential Learning

JOB SUMMARY: The Graduate Assistant, Leadership Development, will assist the Associate Director with advising the Residence Hall Association (RHA) and National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) chapter at West Virginia University focusing on training development, student advocacy, and overall support to chapter members.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

•GA will co-advise the Residence Hall Association (RHA). RHA encompasses elected executive board members to represent the voice of students living in the residence halls

•GA will co-advise the National Residence Hall Honorary(NRHH) helping to support them in the development of their core values of leadership, service and recognition

•GA will recruit, provide training, and evaluate the officers for RHA and NRHH.

•GA will assist in the design of creative and effective training programs that assist student leaders to further understand their job role and responsibility.

•GA will advise the RHA regarding event planning and programming efforts. This includes major events that are sponsored by the RHA and Community Councils.

•GA will help create initiatives to build community councils and build community within the halls and across campus.

•GA will accompany student delegations to state, regional, regional business, and international conferences.

•GA will provide ongoing training for graduate and professional staff who advise community councils.

•GA will support Residential Learning processes and initiatives including working with supervisor to integrate Residential Curriculum model into their work

•Provide office assistance as needed

•Other duties as assigned by the Director, Associate Director, or Assistant Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current WVUgraduate student in good standing
  • Must maintain a 3.0 Cumulative GPA
  • Enrolled in at least nine (9) credit hours in a degree-earning graduate program at West Virginia University, preferably the Higher Education Administration program
  • Enthusiastic, creative, collaborative, and flexible
  • Self-motivated and able to work with little direct supervision
  • Ability to work collaboratively with offices across multiple university departments
  • Ability to maintain confidentially in all operations and interactions
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work nights and weekends during times when student organizations meet
  • Ability to travel with student organizations

COMPENSATION:

  • $6,200 / semester
  • Tuition Waiver with departmental approval

PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT: Academic Year Appointment
