First, start by doing a “save as” of this document as A2yourname_fall09.

Use this template for assignments 2-5. This will become a cumulative record of your previous and current work. I will review your work and fill in the evaluation form at the end of each assignment. For the next assignment, do a save as and rename the file. This will leave your previous work and my evaluation in place. By the end of the semester this document will show your cumulative work, revisions, and reflections on the changes you made and why you made them. Showing your previous and current work is a requirement of the course.

Group versus Individual Assignments

Assignments 2 and 3 are group projects. Assignments 4 and 5 are individual assignments. If you want to continue to work in a group for assignments 4 and 5 you must earn the privilege by communicating early in the week, fully participating in the assignment, and accepting responsibility for the role you play on the team. If you find a classmate that you would like to collaborate with on assignments 4 and 5, both of you need to send an email to me indicating that you understand and accept the responsibility of team collaboration and are willing to work together. Do not team up with someone who does not carry their load; working alone on the final assignments is an option.

Assignment 2 – Message Design – Group Assignment

Your final project will be the pre-production documentation needed to develop an information or education website.

As a group, choose a simple and familiar topic. Do not use an existing website, even if you made it. This project requires new thinking, not a revision of old thinking. You will develop the different pre-production elements throughout the course.

I am not kidding about a simple topic. Developing a website is a multifaceted process with many iterative steps. Make your topic simple so you can see the complexity. Run topic ideas past me if you are not sure.

1.Message Design

2.Assignment 2 Summary (1-3 paragraphs)

As an individual, summarize the assignment and your contribution to your group.

I offered advice to my group and regular input. I helped initiate the idea process much earlier than anyone else in the group, very early in the week. The reason for this is because it becomes very difficult to collaborate so close to our deadline. It’s not like there is a way to force your group to all be online and discuss things at the same time. I felt that if I got the ball rolling early, it would allow for others to respond and focus their attention toward the assignment as opposed to procrastinating it until it’s too late.

I also helped by making edits on the wiki page to reflect accurate information about Auraria Campus. This is important because our site design is revolved around keeping users informed about campus, not confusing them even more. I was constantly involving myself in discussions on the Blackboard page regarding design issues and areas of concern for our idea. I think our site could be a valuable tool for new college students because it answers many question that a new or shy student might be afraid to ask.

3.Learning 2 Reflection – (1-3 paragraphs)

What did you learn and how did you learn it? What do you need to know more about?

When our group all agreed on a topic, I think we all realized there is an incredible amount of material to cover. Even with a topic that sounds very simple, like Auraria Campus, there are so many different directions to go. I learned that there is much more to consider than just going to class. There are issues of internet usage, parking prices, public transportation, entertainment, and much, much more.

I think the information that we all need to know more about has to do with the actual collection of places we plan to list on the site. For example, which businesses get recommended on the website for things such as entertainment or restaurants? Are certain places held on a higher scale than others? These are all issues our group will be dealing with and resolving as the development of our website progresses.

3.Assignment 3 Summary (1-3 paragraphs)

My contribution was extensive. I was able to comment every day and help facilitate to other group members just what was needed to get this assignment done by our deadline. I was able to submit an edited and revised Goal/Objective based on the feedback that our group was given from assignment A2. I also made some effective commentary to the other group members that were helping out. I made simple edits to our Wiki page that reflected just what Imaginedia was trying to convey with our revision. I helped others based on my comments when they had questions about certain formatting issues. I know that it can be hard and daunting to make changes when you aren’t sure if the rest of the group will agree or not. I have never discredited anyone’s ideas either. I am always open to new perspectives and ideas. It’s important to see things from every side of the fence, so to speak.

4.Learning 3 Reflection – (1-3 paragraphs)

A revision is just how it sounds; a new vision on a previous project. There were some editing issues that were involved that were difficult to overcome due to the workload outside of this class for each of us. It’s getting close to midterms for all of us, so to get everyone on board with this revision was difficult. I have gotten a little concerned considering we haven’t heard from some of the group members for some time. I guess it’s hard to play catch-up when we are so deep into this project. I can see group projects as being intimidating at first, but once you adapt to the new environment, it’s not so difficult. I think the remainder of our actively involved group has adapted to the newness of this kind of communication and we are producing quality work.

I think if our group were to meet face to face, we would be a very productive team, even more than we are now. The fact that we produce the kind of assignments we have so far without every speaking to each other proves that this kind of communication can actually be effective and get things done.
