Writing Assignment #2: Description
Assignment
Being able to describe a situation or scenario in which you find yourself gives you the ability to place the reader into your world. This will enable you to not only illustrate the location or person that you are writing about but to actually convey the way you see things-your own unique experience-to someone else.
How do I do this?
To exhibit writing proficiency in this style, on Wednesday, September 28th, you will forgo the drab walls of our classroom for the more stimulating atmosphere of the Brownstone Café. As you enter and find a comfortable spot to sit, you may grab a coffee or some food to provide more sensory experiences for you to expound on. Take a few minutes, and then choose a topic that gives you enough material to write a full two pages. You can focus on the artwork displayed on the walls, the variety of food and drink available, the smells and sounds of the place (there’s always music playing in the background), the characteristics of the customers that day, or the atmosphere that the employees create, just to name a few. There’s something for everyone, so even if you’re not a coffee shop regular, you can still find a plethora of material to cover this writing assignment.
What am I supposed to accomplish?
You should be able to describe the way you see and experience a room, person, or situation. You began the last paper assignment by focusing on an experience through someone else’s eyes, and now you want to build upon that and focus on providing enough detail that the reader can actually see and feel themselves in that room, in front of that person, or experiencing that situation that you are writing about.
