What English Teachers Do with Their Students in the Sandbox (Sumita Lall, Heather Aguailar)

In his book, Play: How it Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul, Stuart Brown suggests that “Play is a state of mind, rather than an activity. . . an absorbing, apparently purposeless activity that provides enjoyment and a suspension of self-consciousness and sense of time. It is also self-motivating and makes you want to do it again” (60). Part of what makes teaching at a community college so exciting is our shared goal to tap into our students’ sense of play – as this instinct to play could potentially be a source of deep learning, enthusiastic engagement, and recognition of the wide range of strengths our students bring with them into our classrooms – but by the time our students reach us, we often notice the challenge of setting up the right conditions to induce the proper emotional state for play to happen. This workshop is intended to provide a platform for sharing ways to increase “play” in our classrooms, using as a starting point two activities that come from an English composition classroom wherein teachers have discovered that safe and playful environments engage a wider range of students to feel internally motivated

to listen and interact with each other and the teacher. We’ve learned that not everyone needs to feel enthusiastic about play, but everyone can learn by doing a playful activity.MCW 312

Participants will also learn how Kurzweil can be used to help students edit writing assignments by hearing what they’ve written. Lastly, DSPS staff will identify the difference between Kurzweil 3000 and Firefly and how to provide students and teachers home access. The morning session of the training will be instructional, the afternoon primarily hands-on. Participants will be encouraged to work in groups to apply what they’ve learned to their own reading assignments. Active Shooter on Campus – A Classroom Strategy (Larry Reynosa)

The intention of the film is to raise the possibility of surviving an "Active Shooter" that might breach a classroom and what a teacher can do in order to save their own life, as well as, the lives of their students. This film has been created as an instructional training film that can be used by any teacher in order to create a hands-on training session in regards to surviving an active shooter situation. If used in conjunction with the current film that is currently on our VC website, I believe teachers around the country could very well save lives. In addition to sharing his film, Mr. Reynosa will also share guidelines for dealing with active shooters on a campus and then invite participants to experience a hands-on training session near the end of the workshop. This should be a very informative and exciting workshop to say the least! Workshop will be held in ASC 140
