Hi 9C!

I’m sorry, but I won’t be able to be with you this lesson or tomorrow’s lesson.

Work for today: Finish off the questions and note-taking in class, If not finished in class, finish at home.

Work for Friday: Start working on your Photostory assessment task (see attached). Help each other out with the software and the task. à Two know more than one, but you will each make your own photo story.

Write these dates in your record book:

·  Assessment task 1: data analysis test on Monday the 15th, in class, 75 minutes.

·  Assessment task 2: photo story presentation on the 24th, work on the task in class and at home.

This sheet and the PQE sheet are on the wiki: vanweringh9.wikispaces.com

Please email me on if you have any questions.

The rest of the term:

Work for today:

Write this down in your workbook:

Today’s date (10/03/10)

Heading: Changes to global physical processes.

Climate change is the result of changes in the following three large scale physical processes:

- 1. Ocean circulation

- 2. Atmospheric circulation

- 3. Sea level rise

Answer the questions below, using page 132 and 133 in your textbook.

It is really important that you answer in complete sentences, otherwise you will not be able to revise properly for your exam.

Oceanic circulation:

·  Name the three physical processes by which water is moved around the globe.

·  Describe the function of the Gulf Stream

·  What would happen if the Gulf Stream were to be altered?

·  Name the process(es) through which the Gulf Stream could be altered.

Atmospheric circulation:

·  Describe the process which causes the air in the atmosphere to move constantly.

·  Describe why the climate near the equator is hot and wet.

·  Describe what Hadley cells are and how they work.

Sea level rise:

·  Explain in detail why sea levels will rise as a result of global warming.

·  Which variables make it hard to make an accurate predication of the amount of sea level rise in the future?

Write in your workbook:

Impacts of climate change on:

1.  Weather

2.  Coastal areas

3.  Eco systems and habitats

4.  Agriculture

5.  Human Health

Read page 134 – 141 (I know that is quite a lot, try to get as much done as possible)

Take notes (in dot points) on all the impacts.

Make sure to clearly highlight the 5 impacts. Make your notes look good, you will use them for revision. On the data analysis test there will be a short question about the impacts of climate change.

1.  Weather:

·  Two dot points for each weather element (Rainfall, Storms, Heat Waves)

·  ….So that is six dot points in total.

2.  Coastal Areas:

·  5 shortened dot points from the book.

3.  Eco systems and habitats

·  5 dot points

4.  Agriculture

·  3 dot points

5.  Human Health

·  3 dot points

Assessment task 2:

Photostory

You will find PhotoStory installed on your computer, it should be in your Programs menu, it is a Microsoft program. If you cannot find it, start working on the task anyway and use Powerpoint.

This is what Photostory does:

GLOBAL WARMING

Assessment task

The Lasting Effects of Global Warming

TASK: To research and create a PHOTOSTORY presentation addressing one of the effects of Global Warming.

Step 1

Select one of the following effects of global warming (or any others that are suggested by your teacher):

Positive:

·  Longer growing seasons for farmers

Negative

1

·  Desertification

·  Rising Sea Levels

·  Melting ice caps and glaciers

·  Increase in infectious diseases

·  Coral Bleaching

·  Forest Fires

·  Tropical cyclone and hurricanes

·  Slowing of the Gulf Stream

·  Melting of permafrost

·  Increased cloud cover

·  Extinction of species

·  Environmental Refugees

·  Heat waves

·  Wildfires

·  Drought

·  Soil Degradation

1

Step 2

Conduct the following investigation, following these guiding questions:

1.  How does global warming (increased global temperatures) lead to your chosen impact?

2.  How do we know that the impact is already being felt or will be felt in the future? (What is the evidence?)

3.  Where in the world will your chosen impact be felt? Which locations will it effect the most?

4.  What might the social, economic, environmental and political outcomes (SHEEPT) of your chosen impact be?

Step 3

Using the results of your investigation and research, create and record a photostory using the software Photostory. Imagine you will be presenting your Photostory at an International Conference on Global Warming.

Checklist:

Make sure you have the following as part of your assessment task

a)  A range of appropriate images (between 20- 30)

b)  Work on the length of time each image is shown, not too long please, otherwise your presentation will be too long and slightly boring.

c)  5-7 slides with text (no more than 30 words on the page or image – less words are better).

d)  All text must be able to be read at an appropriate speed.

e)  Be sure your text is placed on an appropriate colour back ground.

f)  Narration that is linked to the images being shown.

g)  If you are using music with lyrics, make sure the lyrics fit the images.

h)  Font size should be large enough to read. (no smaller that size 24).

i)  Images must be in focus! (get full size image when searching)

Assessment criteria:

·  Level of understanding of the lasting impacts that human activities can leave on the environment, 10 marks

·  Ability to select and organise appropriate and relevant information, 10 marks

·  Ability to use a variety of difference resources, 5 marks

·  Ability to use Photostory software effectively, 5 marks
