FUNCTIONAL TITLE:

Motor Grader/Truck Operator

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Road Maintenance Superintendent, applies skills related to operating heavy motorized equipment used in road maintenance, repair, and construction, performs manual labor duties; performs related work as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Assignments may vary from position to position. However, the incumbent can be expected to perform a variety of the following:

Operates motor grader to spread road-surfacing material such as gravel or crushed rock to maintain road surface, shoulder and drives. Operates medium and light equipment such as single and tandem axle dump truck, front-end loader, light industrial tractor, and power mowing equipment in a variety of road maintenance, repair, and construction duties.

Operates a motor grader equipped with plow blades and wing to remove snow and ice from road. Operates truck with snow blade, wing, and sander; manipulates controls, lowers/raises blade and spreads materials to remove snow and ice from road surfaces; mounts and dismounts plow and blades.

Performs required manual labor tasks involved in road, bridge, tile, culvert maintenance, repair, and construction projects as a crew member, such as; dig post holes, place and replace signs, put-up and takedown barricades, patch pavements, paint and repair barricades, shovels snow from sidewalks on departmental property, perform janitorial service in departmental buildings.

Operates a variety of manually operated auxiliary equipment such as air hammer and tamper, in conjunction with heavier equipment on various maintenance, repair and construction projects.

Operates traffic control signs and directs traffic around road maintenance, repair or construction site following established safety precautions.

Operates power equipment and uses hand tools to cut trees and brush and clean-out culverts, operates or feeds shipper, treats stumps after brush cutting.

Operates light loader and loads truck with materials such as gravel, broken concrete or asphalt paving material, dirt and snow, drives truck and hauls load to predetermined site, manipulates controls and dumps load.

Maintains and services assigned equipment by changing oil; greasing moving parts; replacing filters; changing tires; and performing other general maintenance as needed. Washes and cleans vehicles when needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can safely perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skill and abilities.

Ability to safely operate road construction, maintenance and repair equipment, including light, medium and heavy trucks; tractors; tractors; mowers; loaders; dozers; and any related truck-mounted attachments, and knowledge of maintenance and servicing requirements of such equipment and vehicles.

Knowledge of the operating hazards of equipment and vehicles used in road construction, repair and maintenance and corresponding safety precautions to be taken during seasonal weather conditions.

Knowledge of methods and techniques used in operating and maintaining diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and equipment.

Ability to safely operate a variety of hand and power tools.

Ability to safely dig using a shovel.

Ability to work outdoors for extended periods of time under unfavorable weather conditions, including extreme cold or heat.

Ability to safely perform physical labor associated with road construction, maintenance, repair and signing, including walking, bending stooping, standing or kneeling; grasping or reaching objects, tools or controls; lifting and carrying objects weighing up to eighty pounds; climbing ladders; and climbing in and out of cab of truck.

Ability to maintain all required licenses, registrations and certifications.

Ability to establish effective working relationships with co-workers assigned employees and supervisors.

Ability to follow oral, written or diagrammatic instructions.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Training

High School graduate

Work Experience

Three years of heavy equipment operation preferred.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

Required licenses, registrations and certifications:

CDL driver’s license, Class B minimum

Other certifications as may be required by county engineer

Required post-offer physical examinations:

By physician designated by county verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.

Required drug testing:

Drug screen for CDL

Residency requirement:

County residency preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Manual dexterity is required. Sits, stands, walks, turns, and bends. Moderate to heavy (50-100 lbs.) lifting required when performing manual labor as described above, under essential duties. Frequent sitting and operating equipment and trucks in various types of situations, also described under essential duties.

SAFETY TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

First aid/CPR, bloodborne pathogens, fire extinguisher use and operation, hazard communication, work zone traffic control and safety.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is usually performed in the cab of equipment, but much time may be spent outside in adverse weather conditions. The position involves exposure to extreme temperatures; humidity; dirt, dust, and fumes; snow and ice conditions; noise due to operation of machinery or power tools; and other hazards at road construction sites.
