THE SERVICE OF THE WORD (p. 38 in the red hymnal)

- WE GATHER TO WORSHIP -

OPENING HYMN: CW #568: “Good News of God Above”

M:The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.

C:And also with you.

M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

C:Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.

C: Amen.

- WE PRAISE THE LORD -

M: In the peace of God’s forgiveness, let us praise the Lord:

C: ♫ (the music is on p. 39 of the hymnal) Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed are they who take refuge in him. Your Word, O Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Your faithfulness continues forever. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed are they who take refuge in him.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Lord Jesus Christ, you work out all things for the good of those who love you. Help us always to fear and love you in obedience to your Word, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. ♫ Amen.

-- WE LISTEN TO THE WORD –

FIRST LESSON: Isaiah 55:6-11

6SeektheLordwhile he may be found;
callon him while he is near.
7Let the wicked forsaketheir ways
and the unrighteous their thoughts.
Let them turnto theLord, and he will have mercyon them,
and to our God, for he will freely pardon.

8“For my thoughtsare not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,”
declares theLord.
9“As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
10As the rainand the snow
come down from heaven,
and do not return to it
without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish,
so that it yields seedfor the sower and bread for the eater,
11so is my wordthat goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purposefor which I sent it.

PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 46, p.84

SECOND LESSON: Romans 10:5-17
5Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: “The person who does these things will live by them.”[a]6But the righteousness that is by faithsays: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’”[b](that is, to bring Christ down)7“or ‘Who will descend into the deep?’”[c](that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).8But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,”[d]that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim:9If you declarewith your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,”and believein your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.10For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.11As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”[e]12For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of alland richly blesses all who call on him,13for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lordwill be saved.”[f]

14How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?15And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”[g]

16But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?”[h]17Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.

VERSE OF THE DAY: CW # 200 vs.

The Word they still shall let remain, Nor any thanks have fo-r it; He’s by our side upon the plain With his good gifts and Spir-it. And do what they will -- Hate, steal, hurt, or kill -- Though all may be gone, Our victory is won; The kingdom’s ours forev-er.

GOSPEL:Matthew10:32-39

32“Whoever acknowledges me before others,I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.33But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.

34“Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.35For I have come to turn

“‘a man against his father,
a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law—
36a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’[a]

37“Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.38Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.39Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.

I. The Plan

III. The Results

THE APOSTLES’ CREED:

I believe in God the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian church, the communion of saints;the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.
