Beyond Algebra and Trig (BAAT)

Mr. Rowe Rm 807

Welcome to the BAAT math class at ARHS. You will find as we go through the year that this class will be different than most math classes that you have taken in High School. The class is designed to increase your skills in advanced algebra, cover topics not explored in other math classes and to prepare you for standardized tests and college. For that reason, the expectations, evaluation procedures and class rules will differ slightly from other math classes in the school.

Class Expectations:

The goals of this class are increase the students mathematical knowledge and to help prepare them for the world of work and/or education beyond high school. Students will be encouraged to become active learners and problem solvers and will be given a great deal of responsibility for their learning. Part of the grade will depend on the students’ individual effort and work ethic.

All of Mr. Rowe’s classes are graded on straight percentages:

93-100=A, 90-92.99=A-

87-88.99=B+, 83-86.99=B, 80-82.99=B-

77-79.99=C+, 73-76.99=C, 70-72.99=C-,

67-69.99=D+, 60-66.99=D

Below 60 percent is an F.

The grades are a running point total from the beginning of the semester to the end of the semester. Quarter grades are not averaged, but are a reflection of the point accumulation at that time. The points students acquire are based on two separate categories: Homework (5%), Assessments (95%).

Homework is assigned most every night and is reviewed every day. The homework scores will be based on a variety of criteria: homework quizzes, completeness, correctness, to name a few.

Homework Expectations

  1. Write out the problem
  2. Show all work
  3. Make an honest attempt on every problem

AssessmentRetakes

*Students must correct the mistakes on the original test prior to a retake

*Students must demonstrate knowledge on each missed problem on a separate assignment prior to the retest

*All homework from the chapter that the student wishes to do a retake test on must be completed

*The retake grade replaces the original grade to determine the final score but a retake score can never exceed a maximum of 90%.

*Grade improvement retakes must be completed within one week of receiving the test or retest back.

*No grade improvement retakes will be administered within 5 school days before the end of either semester due to time constraints

Homework assignments can be found on my webpage (see below). If you are absent please check the site to get as much of what you missed before you return. Absent work will be due the day following the return from absence. Longer absences will be dealt with on an individual basis.

To get along in this math class the student will need the following: a pencil, lined paper, and a graphing calculator.
