World War II Source Sheet No. 44

During the Second World War a range of measures were introduced by national and local governing authorities to counter the threat of an aerial attack on the City. The Council’s City Engineer’s Department, under the supervision of the State Civil Defence Department, was responsible for ‘Air Raid Precautions’ which included the planning and building of air raid shelters and trenches at strategic points around the City (extensive trench works and pipe shelters were installed in Victoria Square and North Terrace). The Council also collaborated with the military in producing plans to counter the effects of aerial gas attacks, providing ‘anti gas’ training and decontamination drills for the City’s inhabitants. A considerable number of Corporation employees also served in the armed forces during the War. Although no official Corporation Honour Roll appears to have been created for those who served in World War II (unlike World War I when an official roll was made), the names of those employees who did enlist are recorded in Town Clerk’s Docket 192 of 1946 ‘Honour Roll – Corporation Officers and Employees’. A City Volunteers Roll and a Nurses Roll were erected at the Town Hall.
