POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title : National Landscape Lead

Reports to : Project Manager

Duty Station : TBD (Bhutan, India, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Nepal or Pakistan)

Travel Frequency : 50% in all WWF's Asia High Mountains Project Areas

Major Function: Serve as the national lead for landscape management planning for the Asia High Mountains (AHM) Project. This position will work with WWF country offices, local and regional partners, and the Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Program (GSLEP) Secretariat to coordinate the development, dissemination, and implementation of climate-smart landscape management plans in the snow leopard range. The landscape management plans will address the management of snow leopards, their prey species, and habitat, and take a climate-smart, integrated approach that addresses issues that affect snow leopards and local communities. The position will be based in a snow leopard range country, and will coordinate with the relevant government, the Snow Leopard Trust and other partners to develop a comprehensive landscape management plan using the agreed GSLEP template. The climate-smart landscape management plan that will serve as a model for other snow leopard range countries.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

1.  Attend GSLEP trainings and technical workshops, and provide critical support to improve regional coordination among partners, working with key actors and governments to develop landscape management plans that conserve snow leopards and promote sustainable development.

2.  Develop and apply approaches and tools for landscape planning, monitoring, and analysis in collaboration with the Project Manager and snow leopard range countries. Ensure effective approaches and tools are based in the science of landscape ecology, and help ensure that the spatial arrangement of management zones and interventions address long-term conservation objectives.

3.  Provide consultation on projects to assess the risk of climate change on landscape patterns and processes, and incorporate climate-adaptive measures into protected area and corridor networks.

4.  Facilitate the integration of climate scenarios, snow leopard distribution, land cover and use, participatory conservation planning and stakeholder consultations, and comprehensive landscape mapping into climate-smart landscape management plans.

5.  Organize and implement workshops that require collaborative technical work on a landscape scale project, or replication of a standard set of methods across landscapes.

6.  Present select management plan, and the process that goes into its development, at planning workshops. Demonstrate the use of the planning approach throughout the development process.

7.  Utilize select management plan as a model and promote the development of similar plans in GSLEP countries in support of their respective national snow leopard plans.

8.  Collaborate closely with and formally support WWF, the Snow Leopard Trust, and GSLEP.

Minimum Educational and Work Experience Requirements:

Knowledge: Master’s degree in Conservation Biology, Landscape Ecology, Geography, Environmental Science or related field required.

Experience: At least 5 years of experience in using landscape ecology and spatial techniques (GIS, remote sensing) to assess landscape function and aid in land use planning. Expertise in the application of principles of landscape ecology for landscape-scale conservation planning and assessment.

Skills and Abilities: This position requires strong writing ability and proven ability in training staff both locally and in the field. Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to provide clear and patient instruction. Ability to facilitate effective national and regional collaboration with stakeholders across sectors.
