REVIEW OF THE 2008-2009 AND 2009-2010 CYCLONE SEASONS

Summary of Cyclone season 2008 – 2009 for Niue

Cyclone Lin formed as a tropical depression to the northwest of Fiji and moved towards the southeast. Tropical Cyclone Lin passed about 587 kilometres to the west-southwest of Niue on Friday morning and brought heavy rain for the whole of the island.

Summary of Cyclone season 2009 – 2010 for Niue

Tropical Cyclone Nisha was the 3rd Cyclone of the season. It was developed to the south-southeast of Samoa and then moving southeast before RSMC Nadi named it on Wednesday 27th January 2010. Nisha was located about 319 kilometres to the Northeast of Niue at 1pm on the same day. Niue reported no major effect from Nisha except rain.

Tropical depression 10F was formed about 287 kilometres to the east-northeast of Pagopago in American Samoa. RSMC Nadi upgraded as a Category 1 Cyclone on Wednesday 11thJanuary 2010 and named it Rene which is about 851 kilometres to the north-northeast of Niue. Nadi upgraded it to category 2 on Thursday morning. Niue Met Service received the first SWB number one from RSMC Nadi on Friday morning at 9:59am. A cyclone alert, as well as a strong wind warning, was now in force for Niue. Cyclone remained as category 2 and was located around 521 kilometres to the north of Niue at 9am on Friday 12th February 2010.

RSMC Nadi upgraded the warning for Niue to Gale on SWB number four and TC Rene has increased its strength to category 3 and about 330 kilometres north-northwest of Niue at 10am Saturday 13th Feb 2010.

RSMC Nadi cancelled the Gale warning for Niue on SWB number nine when Rene was about 415 kilometres west-northwest of Niue at 10pm Saturday night and it was the last SWB issued by Nadi for Niue as Rene was moving further away from the island. Nine SWB were issued for TC Rene for Niue, eight from RSMC Nadi and one from RSMC Wellington as Nadi server was down. The closest position for Niue was about 170 kilometres west-northwest of Niue at 7pm on Saturday 13th Feb 2010 issued by RSMC Nadi on SWB number eight. Highest wind speed recorded at Hanan Airport was 26 knots, maximum gust of 42 knots and the lowest pressure of 998.0 HPA.
