Workshop Title: Towards comprehensive evaluation for health and development: promoting the integration of evaluation methods.

Methods: impact evaluation for health; theories of change; process evaluation; mixed methods for evaluation.

Background

A British Council programme, ‘British Council Researcher Links’ provides opportunities for early career researchers from the UK and internationally to interact, learn from each other and explore opportunities for building long-lasting research collaborations.

As part of this programme, staff at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) Mexico are organising a workshop that will bring together researchers from Mexico and the United Kingdom who have research experience in the field of evaluation in health care. The aim is to share understanding of evaluation methods, and how to integrate quantitative and qualitative methods within evaluation to assess whether an intervention works and how it works.

Participants should be early career researchers with experience using experimental or quasi-experimental methods to evaluate impact in health and/or process evaluation methods, and participatory approaches to understand implementation and how interventions work. A further theme within the workshop will be the evaluation of financial incentives in health (for example, performance based financing or conditional cash transfers, vouchers, health insurance or other demand-side financing approach).
Knowledge sharing and learning between participants will be promoted through a mix of lectures, research “surgeries” (where researchers will have the opportunity to present their research in the form of a poster/short oral presentation and discuss this with established researchers from the UK and Mexico), and networking sessions pairing researchers from each country to further discuss specific methodological issues in relation to their own research and learn from one another. The workshop will have a methodological focus, aiming to raise awareness and understanding of state of the art methods for evaluation and to promote working together on collaborative proposals and research papers. Time will also be set aside to discuss further training and funding opportunities. There will be a focus on building up links for future collaborations and participants will be selected on the basis of their research potential and ability to build longer term links.

Dates and venue: The workshop will take place over 5 days during the week of April 20th 2015 in London.

Funding

The British Council will cover the costs related to the participation to the workshop, including: travel (both international and local), accommodation and meals. Costs for the visa will be covered; however participants will be responsible for making all the necessary arrangements. Although this cost will not be covered by the British Council, participants are encouraged to purchase an adequate travel and medical insurance. The British Council accepts no responsibility for any problems which may occur when the participants are in-country.

Josephine Borghi: and Juan Pablo Gutierrez:

Eligibility Criteria:

- Applications must be submitted using the Researcher Links application form

- Application must be submitted before the above deadline

- Participants must be Early Career Researchers: being in their last year of PhD, or holding a PhD and having up to 10 years post-PhD experience with research experience in evaluation methods (measuring impact through quasi-experimental methods, and/or undertaking process evaluation, theories of change).

- Participants must have a research or academic position (either a permanent post, research contract, or studentship/fellowship) at a recognised research institution either in the UK or in Mexico.

-Researchers have to be based at an Institution in Mexico or the UK, regardless of nationality (so could be non Mexican/ or non-UK). UK or Mexicans based at institutions outside of Mexico or the UK are however unfortunately not eligible.
