SHARP Lesson Plan

Workshop:Strategies to keep your brain and memory sharp

Audience: 15-35 adults over the age of 50, with varying experience and education.

Rationale: With increased life spans and an aging population, it will become increasingly important, for older adults to maintain their health (cognitive, physical, and emotional), abilities and quality of life. Education can play a vital role in facilitating this process.

It is hoped that this workshop can assist in providing more power and ability to cope with the transitions associated with aging, as per the theory of margin developed by Howard McClusky. Both coping and power needs will be addressed by providing workshop participants with tools to maintainand aid their memory.

“Fear of memory loss is a common concern of people as they age” Merriam, Caffarella & Baumgartner, 2007, p. 392). As such, it is such an important issuethat can be addressed in a workshop on keeping the brain and memory sharp.

Objectives – At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

1)Identify how memory works

2)Understand what affects memory

3)Identify and discuss methods to preserve and aid memory

4)Develop a personal plan to preserve and aid memory
