WorkSHEET 8.1Construction: the finishing touches

Name: ______

Question 1 – 10 refer to information available from the floor plan below.

1 / Use the scale given, to determine the dimensions of bedroom 1. /
Bedroom 1 measures 2.9 cm by 2.9 cm.
Scale is 1 : 150.
So, actual length and width of bedroom
= 2.9 cm 150
= 435 cm
= 4.35 m
So, bedroom 1 is 4.35 m square.
2 / The windows in bedroom 1 are both 1200 mm high. Use the scale on the plan to determine the width of each window, then calculate the total window area in bedroom 1. /

3 / How many litres of paint would be required to give the ceiling of bedroom 1 two coats of paint, if the coverage is 12 m2/litre? /
The ceiling is 4.35 m square.

4 / How many litres of paint would be required to paint the walls and door of bedroom 1 with an undercoat and two top coats? Make allowance for the windows. The walls are 2400 mm high. The paint coverage is 14m2/litre. /

5 / Consider the option of wallpapering the walls in bedroom 1. Ignoring any openings, determine the number of rolls of wallpaper required to complete the job. The rolls are
10 m long and 50 cm wide. /
Total length to be wallpapered

6 / Compare the cost of painting the walls in bedroom 1 with the cost of wallpapering.
Paint can be purchased in 4 litre tins at $32 each. The wallpaper rolls are $23 each. /

Painting

No. of litres of paint required= 7.7 L
Capacity of one tin of paint = 4 L
No. of tins of paint required= 7.7 4
= 1.925
So, two tins of paint would be required.
Cost of paint= $32 2
= $64

Wallpapering

No. of rolls of wallpaper required = 9
Cost of wallpaper= $23 9
= $207
It is cheaper to paint rather than wallpaper.
Amount saved by painting= $207 – $64
= $143
7 / Consider the L-shaped section of the floor comprising the main hallway and the family room.
Determine the area of this section. / The plan measurements are as indicated on the diagram above.
Using the scale 1 : 150 these equate to the actual measurements shown in brackets.

8 / Three coats of varnish are required to polish the floors of the main hallway/family area.
The varnish can be purchased in 1-litre tins at $17 each.
Determine the cost of the varnish for the job, if the coverage is 12 m2/litre. /
9 / The sliding doors at the entrance to the lounge from the hallway are to be covered with a feature wallpaper (which does not require any pattern matching).
How many rolls of wallpaper (10 m long and 50 cm wide) are required if the sliding doors are 2 m high?
The doors must be covered both sides. /

The opening measures 1.5 cm.

10 / Compare the sizes of bedrooms 2, 3 and 4.
State the floor area of each. /

Each bedroom measures 2.5 cm by 2.9 cm.

So, bedrooms 2, 3 and 4 are all the same size.
