The Opportunity:

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking two Maintenance Lead Techniciansto join our dynamic teams in Tacoma and Alder. These experienced technicians will lead by example and have a personal commitment to safety while coordinating daily work activities such as heavy equipment operations, providing roadway maintenance for sub-sections of highways, and performing snow and ice removal functions. These positions must have public safety and the safety of fellow employees as a high priority and must be considered in every decision and activity affecting the highway facilities.

We have two Maintenance Lead Technician positions available, one day shift position in Alder and one night shift position in Tacoma.The day shift position typically worksMonday-Thursday. The night shiftposition typically works Tuesday-Friday. The night shift position is eligible for an additional 10% Geographical assignment pay as well as year around Night pay.

This position will perform the following work:

  • Lead and mentor crews in, and perform winter safety operations to include plowing snow, applying deicers and patrolling the highway for hazardous conditions.
  • Plan, schedule, coordinate, supervise, direct and assist in daily maintenance and repair projects at the safety rest area facilities.
  • Operate Class A, B, and CCommercial Driver License(CLD) equipment.
  • Safely provide proper traffic control supervision for all work operations and emergency road closures.
  • Saferemoval and cleanup of unlawful dwellings, and coordinates efforts through appropriate law enforcement contacts.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Removal of brush, trees and other roadway obstructions.
  • Steward safety programs by knowing and enforcing the established WSDOT/WAC safety policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

An ideal candidate for this position will have:

  • CDL Class A with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction and Medical Examiners certificate.
  • Ability to report to duty station within a 60 minute response time.
  • A valid Traffic Control Flagger Card with experience in traffic control.
  • Proficient computer and tablet skills, with the ability to, create reports, send and receive emails, track inventories, etc.
  • Ability to move and lift objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds in a safe manner and safely traverse uneven and steep terrain in all weather conditions.
  • Possession of Plans Reading Certification is preferred.
  • High School diploma or GED.

Desired/Preferred Experience, skill and abilities:

  • Two (2) years highway maintenance, roadway construction or related experience
  • One (1) year experience as a Maintenance Technician 3 or Maintenance Specialist 3 or two (2) year experience as a maintenance Technician 2.
  • Possession of valid Traffic Control Flagger Card with experience in traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs, and flagging.
  • Knowledge of CMMS and Safety Rest Areas.
  • At least two years of experience performing traffic control on multi-lane, high speed, highways.
  • Experience in winter snow and ice control operations.
  • At least one year of experience operating and transporting equipment.
  • Experience in repair of roadway, shoulders, guardrails and signs.

Note:

This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, candidates who are appointed are required to become members of the WFSE, or arrange to pay to that union a fee equivalent to its regular monthly dues. The union shop provision shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee's initial 30 days in this classification.
