Thursday 5th October 2017

Dear Parents and Carers,

It is with great sadness that I write to inform you that our colleague Peter Seagrave passed away on Sunday 24th September 2017 September following a long battle with cancer.

Peter had been a governor at Bluecoat School March 2012 and many of you will have known him through the work he did to support literacy within the school and through his attendance at school plays, concerts and open events where he regularly represented the governing body.

Throughout his time as a governor, Peter was a passionate and generous supporter of the school. I and the rest of the governing body benefited enormously from his sound advice, often drawn from his career in international business, and from his ability to lighten darker moments with a timely injection of his own special brand of humour.

Peter’s greatest passion as school governor was his unstinting commitment to improve our children’s literacy. Peter recognised the importance of literacy to a child’s wider education and dedicated personal time virtually every week to read with children, supporting them to expand their vocabulary and develop their love of books. He also encouraged a number of his Rotary Club colleagues to do the same.

What some of you may not know, though, is that Peter was a decisive force behind the creation of our new library. Peter saw the value that a modern library would add to our children’s education and took it upon himself to represent our plans to his colleagues in The Stamford Burghley Rotary Club and secure the significant funding that enabled us both to build a bright and inviting space and stock it with exciting books that have inspired a love of reading in many of our children. Our library stands as a reminder of Peter’s devotion to Bluecoat School and his commitment to ensuring our children get the very best education they can.

We shall miss him.

Mark Kieran
