MARINE RESOURCE CONSERVATION WORKING GROUP (MRCWG) WORKPLAN 2008

- To discuss the implementation of Leader’s Declaration on Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI), and its regional plan of action at the MRCWG-21 meeting and at the Joint Session of FWG and MRCWG in Piura, Peru on April 14-18, 2008.
- To review the results of an Independent Assessment on MRCWG as part of the SCE Recommendation on MRCWG
- To report the results of BPA stock-take workshop and the implementation strategies to member economies, and later to the AMM.
- To distribute to APEC stake holders the MRCWG publication resulting from the MRCWG 20 meeting in Gold Coast, Australia
2. / Anticipated Activities and/or Proposed Work plan with outside organization in response to Ministers’ call for greater engagement with:
a) Business Sector; and
b) Other Organizations/Stakeholders, including the IFIs and other International Organizations /
- MRCWG has involved in the planning and implementation program of the CTI with international organizations such as GEF, World Bank, ADB, and UNEP.
- MRCWG has participated in the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment survey conducted by the UN University
- Together with FWG will participate at the World Ocean Conference 2009, in Manado, Indonesia
- To enhance private-government-link programs across APEC member economies on Marine Resource Conservation activities.
3. / Identify cross cutting issues and explain how they will be coordinated across Fora /
- MRCWG has participated at the APEC Tourism WG Meeting, in Bandung, Indonesia (October, 2007). There is a strong link between marine and tourism aspects
- Supports joint FWG-MRCWG joint proposal on the Bali Plan of Action stock-take.
4. / Expected Outcomes/Deliverables For 2008 /
- Strategy to implement the Independent Assessment results, as part of the SCE Recommendations on MRCWG.
- Report document of 21st MRCWG Annual Meeting and 7th Joint Session MRCWG-FWG.
- The Bali Plan of Action agreed to in 2005 by APEC Oceans-Related Ministers aimed at providing high-level political support through a broad strategic framework for substantial and concrete steps in the balancing of the sustainable use of marine resources and protection of the environment with economic growth and community sustainability, all of which embodied an ecosystem-based approach to coasts and oceans, and their resources.
