I.Meeting schedule:

II.DIVERSIFYING THE BENCH
Brenda reported that she has recruited four students to work on the project from the Latino Law Students Association (LLSA) with the University of Washington Law School. She and Erica met with the students, divided the sections that the LLSA will work on, and discussed the work assignments. The students have committed to 4/hours per month each. The next meeting via teleconference is set for February 25 in the afternoon.
The timeline of project by the students are as follows:
February - research statutes, city and county
March - finals
April - interviews
May - compilations
Bonnie reported that she is currently attempting to recruit students from the Black Law Student Association (BLSA) with the SeattleUniversityLawSchool. She will recruit four students to start in March after their national BLSA conference. It was agreed that Bonnie will set up a meeting to discuss the project, commitments, and timeline.
III.YOUTH AND JUSTICE FORUM
Erica reported that planning has begun for the Tri-Cities Youth and Justice Forum. She has reported that one of the planners, Nancy Stephens, from the Seattle Youth and Law Forum will attempt to attend the Tri-Cities event. She also reported that she and Nancy discussed assembling a “How to conduct a forum” manual after the Tri-Cities and Seattle forums.
Discussion ensued in regards to holding forums in other venues. Erica stated that she will follow up with Spokane community members to assess that possibility. Erica was also advised to follow up with Amalia Maestas regarding hosting a Forum at the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe reservation.
C.Need to do:
Monto-initiate a teleconference for Tri-Cities planning
Erica-follow up with Amalia Maestas regarding Native American Forum
Erica-follow up with Bonnie Glenn regarding Seattle Youth and Justice Forum
IV.Update RESOURCE DIRECTORY
Erica discussed the possibility of recruiting student volunteers to conduct the update. A recommendation was made to determine the value and usefulness of the resource directory. Erica volunteered to follow up with Joslyn, WSBA Diversity Advocate, to see if we can partner in the project. A recommendation was made to find out who updated the directory in 1997 and 1999 and fee for the projects and have the materials available at the February 25 Commission meeting.
V.Fall Judicial Conference – National Speaker
Erica reported that a formal letter of invitation was sent to Robert Grey, Jr., president of the American Bar Association, asking him to be our keynote speaker at the end of January. Still waiting to hear back from his office.
Discussed weather we want to continue recommending a national speaker to the planning committee every other year or every year. Also discussed who we could invite.
