Word Work Directions
Word Work is due every Friday. Make sure to plan ahead!
- Glue in the new word set. Add the pages to the Table of Contents in the LN. Tier each of your words.
●Level 2 – I ‘ve heard this word, but not sure what it means
●Level 3 – I have never heard this word before / 4. Create a Thinking Map to show your understanding of the terms. Connect and sort words with similar meanings. Be creative! The thinking maps are located on the wall in the classroom.
2. Match the words to the definitions. Make sure you understand the definition.
Use if you need to know how to pronounce it or get a better definition.
Write the word parts on index cards and add them to your ring. These are flashcards to help you study. / 5. Create a picture representation or write a connection for all 10 vocabulary words. Some ideas to help:
●What does the word remind you of?
●What does the word look like?
●How would you use this word in your life?
3. Write a sentence for each word. The sentence must demonstrate understanding of the term by having a context clue that shows the meaning of the word. Underline the word and circle the context clue.

*Challenge: Write a story that makes sense using all ten words. / 6. Add a synonym and antonym to each word next the definition list. If you need assistance, you may consult a thesaurus!

Enrichment
Matching – ConcentrationCreate matching cards that illustrate your vocabulary words. One card must have your word and the other card needs to have an illustration or the definition in your own words. After cards are created, play the memory game “Concentration” and keep the pairs which you correctly match. Play with a friend. / Riddles
Using what you know about the vocabulary words, write riddles for at least 8 of your words. Remember a riddle is when you ask a puzzling question that must be figured out or solved. Therefore, when you write the riddles for you words, be sure to include clues with the word’s meaning. / Sing About It
Create a song/rap using your vocabulary words. Use as many of the words as you can. The song must show you understand the meaning of the words. Once your song/rap is complete and you have practiced it, you may have a classmate record you singing it using the iPad. Be sure to save it so the teacher can review it.
A Short Story
Write a short story using as many vocabulary words as you can. Your story must make sense and demonstrate you understand the words. Underline the words you use in your story. / Cartoons or Comic Strips
Draw a comic strip with speaking characters. Have your characters
speak using as many of your vocabulary words as possible. However, their comments must show that you understand the meaning of your vocabulary words. / Like or As…Similes
Create a simile for at least 8 of your words. Remember a simile is a comparison of two things using the words like or as. You must ALSO explain each simile!
Word Nerd
Come up with 10 more words with the same root. 5 should be real words and 5 should be made up by you. Write definitions for each. / You Name the Game
Use your creative skills to create a game using your vocabulary words. Be sure to write the rules for how the game is to be played. You should also make your game board and/or all the pieces you game needs. The game needs to based upon understanding the meaning of the words. / Crossword Puzzle
Using at least 10 vocabulary terms, create a crossword puzzle. Be sure to include a crossword guide with a creative clue for each term going across and down. Number the across/down terms as they appear in the crossword puzzle.
