AP Time Line – 2014/2015
Beginning November 5th, this Time Line is the one to use.
I am making adjustments to the schedule to allow you more freedom in what order you turn your work into me. Student Choice may be a Concentration piece or a Breadth piece; you must have 12 in each category. Just make sure you label the back with A-# so I know which work you are turning in. PLEASE keep up. The workload gets heavier 2nd semester. As long as the Assignments I require are included in your Portfolio, it doesn’t matter what order you turn your work in. I will allow lots of freedom within each piece, however, I will be grading based on the AP College Board Grading Criteria. I expect you to work in my class and outside of class. There is no way you can produce the quality and quantity of work needed to score well in only 45 minutes per day, 5 days per week = 3 hours and 45 minutes per week. Art classes in College require about 10 hours per week of work per class. Even if you are not planning on going into Art in college, your AP Art credit can count for an Elective. So work hard now and allow it to pay off.
This schedule and the due dates are YOUR responsibility to keep up. Do not get behind. THERE IS NO DOWN TIME IN AP ART!
***You must show me your sketch/composition BEFORE you get good paper for each project!!
The following should already be completed and photo ready:
B-1: Transformation Project – focus on imagination
B-2: Peter Max Inspired Project – focus on drawing the figure from life, contour lines, design qualities

Your Semester Exam consists of 11 projects completed and photo ready. These count 9 points each.
What Not To Include in your Portfolio:
From College Portfolio Requirements: We recommend not including any of the following: anime or cartoons, Viking warrior men or women, tattoos, unicorns or other mythological creatures or any other overused imagery whether copied or original, copies from magazines or portraits of celebrities. This might be what you prefer to draw, but colleges look for a different type of original work. (Keep in mind, however, that nothing is absolute. If you are interested in illustration and want to submit one or two representations of work from reference material, limit this to one or two. The bulk of your portfolio should be drawing from direct observation.)
Composition is important. Try to avoid the typical composition of an object stuck in the middle of the paper. Consider placement before you start your piece – don’t leave it to chance. Do preliminary sketches or thumbnail sketches. From these sketches, choose the composition that you find most interesting. Letting your image run off the edges of the picture plane can break up the negative or background space. Be sure to show a full range of values in your drawings, whether you are drawing in black and white or color. It is important to show value contrast which is achieved by making shaded areas very dark and your lighted areas light. Consider your background as important as the imagery in your drawings as well. Don’t just concentrate on the image and quickly throw something on the background to get it done.
Look at the Colleges you are interested in attending and see what their requirements consist of and use your AP Portfolio to fulfill these requirements too.
Required assignments for your Portfolio need to include: If you are 2-D Design, include Design Elements, Color Theory, Repetition, etc. to fit your portfolio. ALSO 2-D Students need to have Typography in at least one of your projects.
