Word transcript: Siraj’s storyAccessing RNIB Overdrive using an iPad with Zoom

Sarah

Hi, I’m Sarah and I work for RNIB-and I’m also partially sighted.

I was really excited that RNIB released an app in conjunction with Overdrive which allows me to download books onto my mobile device. I like using RNIB Overdrive on my ipad because I can use it with a zoom and magnify the screen to a level that suits me. I love the simplicity of the app layout. It’s quite clear to me where the buttons are, and also where I can search for books; and where my account is.

To use the app for the first time, I’m just gonna go to the app store and search for Overdrive… so I’m going tonow select the Overdrive app from the search results and press ‘install’. Once I’ve pressed ‘install’ I’m now going to press ‘open’ and it will take me into the app.

Now it’s asking me to sign up to an Overdrive account-I’ll only have to do this once and it will just mean that I just need to enter my email address and password. Once I’ve created my password I can now go into the RNIB library.

To get the RNIB library I’m just going to go to the ‘home’ menu which is on the top left hand corner of the screen and select ‘add a library’, and then go into search for ‘RNIB’ and then select the RNIB library which comes up in the search results. Once I’ve selected that, it will take me into the library; and now I need to sign in with my library card and pin that RNIB gave me.

Once I’ve signed in I can now search for a book, so I’m just gonna go and search for a book and I’m gonna type in ‘Gone Girl’. And once I’ve searched for ‘Gone Girl’, it will come up in the search results, and now I’m just going to borrow the book from the library, and then it will take me to the bookshelf where I’ll then press download. Now to play the book, I’m just going to go to the home menu and select ‘bookshelf’ from the home menu. And now I can select the book that I want to play by double tapping it, and then the book will start playing automatically.

(The recording starts to play in the background.)

The best thing about Overdrive is that I can take it out and about with me, and actually having it on my tablet makes me more motivated to actually listen to a book-it’s not dependant on where I am or what time of day it is.

If you want to find out more about RNIB Overdrive just email or phone the helpline on 0303 123 9999.
