Word Study Directions

* Please do each activity on the day assigned in order to build skills. *

Monday / Writing Sort
• find a quiet place and flat surface to work on
• dump your words out of your baggie
• put your headers at the top of your columns
• push and say each word out loud as you place it under the correct header
• do this for all of your words and you will have a completed sort
• read all your words to an adult
** You will do this EVERY night! **
• draw columns in your notebook so you can copy your words into your book
• write your headers at the top of the columns and then write all the words in the correct columns
• this is a WRITING SORT
• when you are done, put your words into your baggie, put them back in the envelope in the notebook, and return to school
Tuesday / Speed Sort and Sentences
• sort your words and read to an adult
• mix up the words and sort three times as fast as you can
• write five sentences in your notebook using any five of your words (each sentence should start with a different wordand have at least six words)
• when you are done, put your words into your baggie, put them back in the envelope in the notebook, and return to school
Wednesday / Alphabetical Order
• sort your words and read to an adult
• leave the sorted words under the correct header, and write them in alphabetical order according to their sorts.
Example: -at aCe
at face
cat place
bat race
• when you are done, put your words into your baggie, put them back in the envelope in the notebook, and return to school
Thursday / No Peek Sort
• sort your words and read to an adult
• draw your word sort columns and headers in your notebook
• put the words back into your baggie and give it to an adult
• have an adult call out the words and write them in the correct columns
• this is a NO PEEK SORT (like a practice spelling test)
• have an adult check your “no peek” word sort
• write the words you missed 3 times each in your notebook
• when you are done, put your words into your baggie, put them back in the envelope in the notebook, and return to school
