Young women talk – Women’s stories about learning and working. 50 interviews from across Australia

S4W is working with young women across Australia aged 18-29 years to capture their experiences of learning and working and their vision for women in Australia. The first stage of this project involves 50 young women across Australia telling their stories that will be audio recorded, transcribed, edited and published as a report. In conjunction there is a video project component Young women talk. Aboriginal women’s stories about learning and working. 12 selected stories from across Australiadirected by Kim Lawler(for further information on the video project contact Kim).

S4W is working with young women to provide an opportunity for them to share their experiences of learning and working and their aspirations. The aim is to bring together 50 diverse stories from across Australia to create greater awareness among Australian government decision makers of the life experiences of young women.

Please note that participation in the project is on a voluntary basis.

Purpose:

  • To provide an opportunity for young women to share their personal stories of learning and working and their vision for women in Australia
  • To enable government and others (see Audience below) to better understand the life experiences of young women.
  • To provide government and others (see Audience below) with unique and personal perspectives to inform policy development in the areas of education and employment
  • To enable S4W to continue working towards more positive outcomes for all young women.

Audience:

The Young women talk stories will be presented to the Australian Government Office for Women and the Minister assisting the Prime Minister for Women’s Affairs. S4W will work closely with the Office for Women to communicate the learning from Young Women Talk to a broader audience including government departments and agencies with an interest in young women, employment, education and training and Indigenous affairs and beyond this to educators, business andcommunity organizations.

Outcomes:

A report containing 50 interviews that have been transcribed and edited from 50 audio recorded interviews (People interviewed will be mailed a copy of the final report).

The Young women talk project will be an integral part of S4W’s ongoing work to improve education and employment outcomes for women in Australia. In 2008 the project may develop into a publication, exhibition, forum for young women or a website.
