Summarising changes for NCEA L3

A summary of old and new AS in NCEA level 3 will be given as well as changes that this transition represents.

PRESENTERS:Emma Wilson, Graham Atkinson, Rachel Passmore, Ben Mason, Louise du Toit, Dr Jamie Sneddon, Marie Fitch, Dr Stephanie Budgett

9:30 – 10:30amWorkshop 1:

1A Louise du Toit – Orewa College

Numeracy Unit Standards

Numeracy Unit Standards are being used successfully this year to show some students’ progress in learning mathematics. Come and hear about how we’re doing this and the systems we’ve put in place to make this manageable for students and teachers.

1B Dr Jamie Sneddon – University of Auckland

Networks

Discrete mathematics is an important branch of mathematics. The new

Achievement Standard 2.5 (91260) "Apply network methods in solving

problems" is an interesting and accessible introduction to graph theory,

one of the largest branches of discrete mathematics.

This workshop will cover:

* five algorithms for solving network problems covered by the standard, including one you might not know

* two more network problems not covered by the standard students might ask about

* hands-on activities for working with students

* differences between 'real world' and 'mathematical world' networks

* possible merit / excellence questions about networks (opportunities for students to show relational and extended abstract reasoning)

1CDrMarie Fitch – University of Auckland

Randomisation

This workshop will be a repeat of the randomisation workshop run at Statistics day at the end of 2011. The focus will be on developing your understanding of randomisation tests (used in L2 and L3 statistics standards).

1D Emma Wilson and Anna Martin – Avondale College

Conducting Experiments
We have really enjoyed working as a department this year developing ideas for teachers and students to be successful in teaching and learning concepts relevant to conducting experiments forAS2.10. Emma will help consolidate understandings around this achievement objective aswell as share ideas about how to co-ordinate the actual assessment of this standard.

10:30-11:00amMorning tea

Giveaways for those who register in advance.

11:00-12:00pmWorkshop 2:

2AGraham Atkinson – Pakuranga College

‘Flipping the classroom’

The “flipped classroom” is an idea that has come from the States and is about turning the teaching time around by using technology.

The teacher makes videos of teaching the skills and the students watch them at home rather than doing homework.

Class time becomes an environment where the students know how to do the skill and then practice answering questions with the teacher as a facilitator.

This has the added benefit of being a great resource at exam time for revision (when the teachers may not be available).

Anyone who attends should bring their laptop because Graham wants to show how free screen capture software can be used.

2B Rachel Passmore – St Kentigern College

Time Series for L3

Time Series using iNZight - this workshop will introduce teachers to the new Time Series module on iNZight - no previous knowledge of iNZight required! A comparison of Achievement Standard 3.8 using iNZight and using EXCEL will be presented. Details of resources currently being developed will also be given and feedback is welcomed on any other resources teachers would like.

2CStephanie Budgett – University of Auckland

Probability for L2

Statistical information is prolific in today's media, yet many of us are easily misled or have difficulty in interpreting and challenging statements that are made.

What does "Eating bacon increases your chances of bowel cancer by 20%" really mean? To be informed citizens, it is important that we are able to understand statements that are made about risk so that we can make informed decisions about our lifestyles.

This workshop will illustrate how to calculate a variety of statistics relating to risk, and explore their interpretations. It will also give teachers some background knowledge for teaching risk in Year 12 (external 2.12).

2D Ben Mason – Waiuku College

Literacy issues…

Does literacy interfere with numeracy?

Believe it or not, there is a place for inductive reasoning in our largely inductive approach to teaching.

Inductive reasoning and algebra

Inductive reasoning and fractions

Inductive reasoning and geometry

This workshop offers a sample workbook, some definitions, some discussion and, if you remember to bring a USB, Ben will give you some Year9 stuff

To help with photocopying and organisation of morning tea can you please email this page (or equivalent details) to Jan at or Brenda at

Attendance at workshops are on a first-registered-first served basis so we advise that you pre-register to avoid disappointment on the day.
