Without Air Bag

Remove the horn pad by gently pulling it OFF
Gently push down on the horn lead and turn left to remove the wire and spring
Remove the retaining circlip
Unfasten the steering wheel nut, until it is flush with the end of the shaft
Assemble a suitable steering wheel puller and break the wheel loose from the shaft
When installing the steering wheel, make sure the align the marks made during removal

  1. If necessary to access the battery, remove the air cleaner assembly.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the horn pad and retainer along with any other switches that are mounted to the steering wheel.
  4. Disconnect the horn electrical lead from the canceling cam tower.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  6. Scribe an alignment mark on the steering wheel hub in line with the slash mark on the steering shaft.
  7. Remove the retainer.
  8. Loosen the steering shaft nut, positioning it flush with the end of the shaft.
  9. Assemble steering wheel puller J 1859-03 or equivalent, on the steering wheel hub with two 5/16-18x4 in. bolts. Break the steering wheel loose from the shaft.
  10. Remove the steering wheel puller.
  11. Remove the steering shaft nut.
  12. For 2.5L engines, remove the steering wheel vibration diameter.
  13. Remove the steering wheel from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Align the matchmarks on the wheel hub and shaft and install the steering wheel.
  2. For 2.5L engines, install the steering wheel vibration damper.
  3. Tighten the steering wheel retaining nut to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm). Install the retainer
  4. Attach the horn electrical lead.
  5. Install the horn pad and/or any controls located on the steering wheel.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.
  7. If removed, install the air cleaner assembly.
