Expanded Recycling for District 9
A few months ago I announced an expanded residential and business recycling
program in the 9th District. This program has been wildly successful for residents
and businesses. The attached picture shows one of our business recycling partners;
they purchased five large recycling carts and they were all filled to capacity.
By paying a one-time fee businesses and residents in the Urban Services District
may participate in this pilot program. For a list of what materials are recyclable
please visit, www.louisvilleky.gov/SolidWaste/recycling/Recyclable+Materials.htm.
If you would like more information or to sign up please contact Ms. Katie Holmes at or call 574-1109.

Prescription Drug Disposal

Louisville Metro Police Department, Louisville Metro Solid Waste, Catholic Charities
Senior Services, Kentucky Senior Medicare Patrol, Senior Pharmacy Solutions and
TRIAD are teaming up to provide opportunities for Louisville residents to safely
dispose of their unused medication products. They are sponsoring three (3)
expired drug toss events in Louisville. This is a drive-thru event so there
will be no need to leave your vehicle.

Medication products should never be flushed down the toilet orthe drain, burned
in the open or thrown in the trash because:
·  They can contaminate the environment if they get into the drinking or
ground water
·  They may kill bacteria or produce drug resistant bacteria in sewage
treatment plantsand septic systems if flushed down the drain
·  Burning can release toxic pollutants into the air
·  They can be scavenged from your trash receptables to be illegally used or sold
·  They can be taken mistakenly and cause serious health problems
Items that organizers are encouragingcitizens to bring to the toss are:
·  Expired or unused medications
·  Bulk or loose tablets andcapsules
·  Medications thatshould be kept cold, but were not
Items not accepted:
·  Used or unused hypodermic needles and lances, due to safety reasons
·  Cosmetics, personal care or hygiene items
Due to the volume of drugs brought to the site, please place all tablets and
capsules in a zip-lock bag. Vials (with personal information marked out) should
be placed in another bag/container. Also, place allbottled liquids and tubes of
medication into separate bags. This will helpthe process move more quickly.
For the safety of your family, please keep all medications properly closed in their
original child-resistant containers and transfer to bags immediately prior to your
visit to the drug toss. NO CLINICS, MEDICAL OFFICES or PHARMACIES
