Self-Guided Tour: Areas of Interest

Aloha! Welcome to the Hawaiian Humane Society. Thank you for your support and for visiting us. Our mission is to promote the human-animal bond and the humane treatment of all animals.

The Hawaiian Humane Society was formally established in 1897 and has been part of the Moiliili neighborhood since the late 1930s.

  1. Animal Admissions

This is located at the mauka end of the front parking lot. All incoming are accepted 24 hours a day.

  1. MainBuilding

The administrative offices are located in the main building.

  1. Adoptions and InformationCenter

Our adoption counselors assist potential adopters with pet selection and pet care information. In addition, spay-neuter certificates, dog licenses, pet foods, books, and miscellaneous pet supplies are available. About 6,000 animals find new families at the Humane Society each year.

  1. Education, Volunteer, Library

The ArthurP.McCormackLearningCenter includes a library with a wide variety of animal-related books which the public is welcome to borrow and a classroom for staff and volunteer training, behavior training, and student learning. The volunteer office is also located in this building. Approximately 750 volunteers actively dedicate their time at the Humane Society.

  1. Educational Displays

There are displays throughout the shelter, offering helpful information about animals, their care, and safety.

  1. Rabbit and Guinea Pig Hutch

We have a variety of animals available for adoption, such as turtles, fish, rats, birds, as well as rabbits and guinea pigs.

  1. Dog Kennels

We find families for about2,500 dogs each year. Many of the dogs brought here were lost, unclaimed, and have no identification. A larger percentage of the dogs, however, have been surrendered by their owners. Information cards are displayed on each kennel. We keep the animals as long as they are healthy and sociable to increase their chances of finding a loving family to adopt them, sometimes for months! Note: Please do not stick hands, fingers, faces or other objects inside the kennel.

  1. Cat House

We find homes for more than 2,300 cats each year. The cats are separated into rooms for kittens, young adults and adults. Cats that are held in cages have some difficulty sharing their space with other cats but are very affectionate with people. Note: To avoid overcrowding, please use walkways around and behind the Cat House for observation also.

  1. Puppy Pen

Note: Please do not enter the puppy pen. Contact with puppies from other litters may cause transfer of illnesses to other puppies.

  1. Dog Acquaintance Areas

Interested adopters can interact with potential pets in this area.

  1. Grooming Area (by the safety wheel)

All the dogs are bathed here and we also store pet supplies as well.

  1. McInernyDogPark

McInernyDogPark is open to the public during the Hawaiian Humane Society’s hours. It is one of four dog parks on Oahu. Here dogs can enjoy running and have the opportunity to socialize with other dogs. (Hawaii has a leash law which requires dogs be on a leash when allowed outside their home or yard.)

Other Services

SurgeryCenter

Nearly 8,000 dogs, cats, rabbits and male guinea pigs get spayed or neutered at the Humane Society. Our veterinary team ensures our animals are healthy, ready for adoption, and treated for illnesses and minor injuries.

Field Services

Humane Investigators, deputized by the Honolulu Police Department, respond to approximately 17,000 calls from the public, including 1,500 rescues and emergencies, and 1,300 investigations of alleged animal cruelty. The community can help by ensuring their yards are escape proof, complying with the laws, and volunteering to bring in lost animals when they find them.

Thank you for visiting the Hawaiian Humane Society. We hope you will join us as an educational partner or volunteer. Whether it’s walking dogs, educating a friend or donating your old towels, shoeboxes and newspapers for the animals…we hope you will join our cause!

On Oahu, the Hawaiian Humane Society is the only animal welfare organization that shelters, rescues, adopts and welcomes animals all day, and every day. 100% of donations stays in the islands for the benefit of Hawaii’s animals and people. As an independent non-profit, we receive no funds from the mainland organizations.
