Description of main task(s) /
  • Work as part of the WIS team to provide comprehensive, accurate and up-to-date information to the women of South Australia;
  • Respond to customers in a manner that is sensitive and appropriate to the needs of women from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds and life-style preferences;
  • Assist with the Forward IT program as required including taking bookings, recording customer details, and introducing women to the internet;
  • Contribute to the recording of accurate daily statistics;
  • Contribute to developing and maintaining the WIS information systems by noting any new or updated information that comes to hand;
  • Participate in staff development programs;
  • Keep up to date with current issues and developments in the women’s sector by maintaining an awareness and interest in in-coming information;
  • Assist with general office duties as required, eg filing, photocopying, and basic word processing;
  • Attend quarterly volunteer catch-ups.

Qualifications, skills, expertise, training required /
  • A high level of negotiation, written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to liaise effectively with all people;
  • Ability to relate well to women from a range of backgrounds and life-experiences;
  • Ability to be flexible and work effectively in a team;
  • Ability to objectively handle highly sensitive enquiries in an objective and professional manner;
  • A knowledge and understanding of confidentiality and the WIS commitment to privacy and sensitivity in dealing with client information;
  • A knowledge of the range of community, women’s and information services from both government and non-government organisations;
  • An understanding of the position of women in today’s society, ie the social, cultural, economic and personal issues affecting women in their daily lives;
  • A basic understanding of the Code of Ethics for the South Australian Public Sector;
  • Basic computer skills, including Internet;
  • Willingness to learn and undertake the Shopfront Volunteer training program.

Time commitment/attendance requirements /
  • Volunteers are expected to be punctual and to attend shifts as per the WIS roster;
  • Volunteers will communicate with staff as soon as practical if they are going to be late or will be unable to attend their shift;
  • Volunteers are required to work at least one four-hour shift per week unless an alternative has been negotiated with the WIS Manager.

Screening requirements
CHC, Health Screening etc /
  • Prior to an offer of a volunteer position being made, candidates must provide written authorisation to the Attorney-General’s Department allowing a criminal history check;
  • Upon receipt of the original National Police Certificate the individual must allow sighting of the original certificate for the purposes of verification and copying.

Accountability /
  • Volunteers are accountable to the WIS Manager and/or designated staff members responsible for specific programs.

  • Volunteers are required to assist women in informed decision-making, thus contributing to an increasing awareness of, and skills in seeking, assistance and information from relevant organisations and services.
  • Volunteers are entitled to claim for reimbursement the cost of a public transport day trip ticket.
