Claims we can expect from storms include trees and limbs down on structures and personal property, lightning damage, wind damage, hail damage, and interruption of electrical service (often resulting in sump water/sewer back up). Please contact our ClaimsReportingCenter at (800) 666-6460 if the policyholder’s residence/business is uninhabitable, there is water damage, or the structure is in need of immediate temporary repairs. The ClaimsReportingCenter will escalate these type of claims for the most prompt response.

The Agency Draft and Fast Track Programs are an excellent method of resolving the smaller losses and accelerates the settlement for the policyholder.

We hope the following coverage information will serve as a quick reference guide with the usual claims that results from this type of weather event.

HOMEOWNERS HO-3 POLICY

Structural Wind Damage Claims

First and foremost, if we have claims where structures are seriously damaged, please get those reported as soon as possible so we can handle those claims. Please report those claims to our 24 hour reporting line at 1-800-666-6460.

Tree-Only Damage

The policy form covers trees, limited to $500.00 for the following perils:

Fire

Lightning

Explosion

Riot

Civil commotion

Aircraft

Vehicles not owned or operated by insureds.

Vandalism, malicious mischief

Theft

Coverage for losses related to wind damage to trees is found on Endorsement HO-1SP (02/08), where coverage for reasonable expenses incurred in the removal of covered trees, shrubs and plants on the residence premises is provided for the following perils:

Windstorm

Hail

Weight of ice, snow or sleet

**This coverage is limited to $250.00 per occurrence. The deductible applies to the loss.

CLAIM EXAMPLE: Policyholder has $800.00 cleanup bill for damaged trees. Policyholder has $500 policy deductible. Policyholder’s net loss is $800-$500=$300.00. However, coverage is limited to $250.00. Policyholder is paid $250.00 for this loss. SECOND CLAIM EXAMPLE: Policyholder has $450.00 cleanup bill for damaged trees. Policyholder has $500 deductible. $450.00-$500.00=<$50.00>.

This claim is below the deductible and is not subject to payment.

NOTE: If your customer has the Homeowners Enhancement Endorsement, form 92-267, then the deductible is waived for debris removal. In the example above, the first $250.00 of the loss would be compensable, and the remaining would not be paid due to the limitation of coverage.

Interruption of Electrical Service Claims

We have two endorsements that might be impacted by these losses. Normally these claims come in the form of loss of refrigerated or freezer products held by our policyholder. The Homeowners form does not provide coverage for these losses. Coverage for theselosses must be endorsed via the 92-312 or 92-311 All Star Homeowner Protective Endorsement, which provides $500.00 of coverage for interruption of electrical service to the freezer or refrigerated unit caused by damage to the generating or transmission equipment. Coverage for these losses may also be found on the Homeowners Enhancement Endorsement, form 92-267, which provides $500.00 of coverage for interruption of electrical service to the freezer or refrigerated unit caused by damage to the generating or transmission equipment.

**No deductible applies to this coverage**

  • Power outage, meaning a change in temperature or humidity resulting from complete or partial interruption of electrical power, either on or off the insured premises, due to conditions beyond our customer’s control.

Exclusions apply to this coverage as well. They include:

  • Disconnection of refrigerating, cooling or humidity control system.
