What we do:

WDYWP currently operates in the WinchesterCity district with detached workers in Weeke and Harestock, and in central Winchester. WDYWP also works in partnership with the Police and other young people’s organisations providing a high quality youth work based environment. The Winchester Detached Workers are an integral part of the provision for youth services in the district and liaison/partnership with other organisations is akey part of the work.

Service level agreements are made with funders, and this may include new work. Examples are:

  • Research work is carried out in areas where there is currently no youth provision
  • Development work including youth forums
  • Sports & arts projects

How we are funded:

The annual turnover of the charity is around £28,000

Core work, that is the project management and development role, is funded by revenue grants, based on satisfactory business plans: We have recently received grants from Winchester City Council and Hampshire County Council for the financial year 2012-13 in addition to a recent three-year grant from Children in Need. Projects are funded separately, via donations, special grants and Lottery funding.

The work environment:

The office is situated in Bradbury House which also serves as the Trinity Day Centre for the homeless and is shared by the Project Manager and used by project workers as a base. The majority of Youth Workers’ time is spent working with young people either in the area in which the workers operate, or at functions planned by youth workers throughout the district (eg: dance nights etc) At the beginning of your time with WDYWP we include an induction period which includes working in other areas of the city at a variety of venues.

The Youth Worker posts are for six hours per week, based on evening work. Youth Workers meet the staff team at a central place before going out to meet young people, and working with them in public places. After each face to face session, the evening is evaluated to discuss needs and plan for the next session. Usually two of these six hours are dedicated to youth workers to plan and develop projects.

No member of staff is ever expected to work on their own

Youth Workers are expected to attend training events held for workers from the district for professional development and training. An amount of time from the hours is allotted to do this. The Youthworker may be asked to take on an aspect of the administrative work as part of their professional development; this would be by mutual agreement.

How you will be paid

You will be paid monthly, and extra hours worked will be reimbursed by paying additional hours, to be agreed with the employee. Wages are administered by Winchester Area Community Action on our behalf.
