Dear Parents/Carer,
At school, we teach your child to read but we really want them to become not only confident readers but also enjoy reading and foster a love for reading just for pure enjoyment.
Wouldn’t it be great if, instead of complaining about being bored or having nothing to do, your child would ask you to read them a book? What if your child “read” a book to stuffed animals or a younger sibling as part of her playtime?
If you read books on a regular basis with your child, reading will become part of what they find enjoyable. Children love to imitate their parents and do more of what they find enjoyable.
We know from research all over the world that children who read widely and often and who have plenty of books or magazines to read do better at school than children who don’t have books and magazines.
So please try to read to your child once a day. Attached is a list of recommended books for your child’s age group. Your child has the opportunity to borrow books from the school library.
You can also get some books from the local library local book shops, charity shops and from catalogues and online shopping. The most important thing you should do is make sure that your children see plenty of books or magazines or comics – or all three.
Take your imagination off to new heights by reading lots of wonderful books with your child.
Yours sincerely
