Invitation - (Essential Question)

The President of the United States has many jobs and responsibilities. What are some of them? What would you do if you were President?

Tasks - (Activities)

Students will learn about the roles and responsibilities of the President of the United States by reading a variety of books and listening to read-alouds, Scholastic News – Election Day issue, and watching the video clip on Brain Pop Jr, and “Election Day.”

Students will demonstrate their knowledge by creating a page in Pages that answers the question: What would you do if you were president?

  1. Students will write a rough draft expressing, “What they would do if they were president.”

2.Students will edit their writing with teacher

  1. Teacher will take a photo of students with American flag and backdrop
  2. Students will use template created by teacher in Pages.
  3. Students will learn how to export from iPhoto into Pages

6.Students will practice word processing skills by typing their writing into the Pages document

7.Their page will be displayed on the screen using LCD projector as they orally share their report with their classmates.

These pages will be printed and bound into a class book, made into a slideshow, exported to a Quicktime movie and burned to individual CDs for students to take home to share with their families.

Students will “pair-share” their ideas of what they would do if they were President.

Students will draw and write their sentences on a graphic organizer to be used as a rough draft for their writing.

Situations - (Logistics - time, space, place)

Students will engage in these Election 2008-related activities during the months of October and November to gain a better understanding of who is running for president, what the responsibilities of the president are, and what they would do if they were president.

Assessment - (Observable - Camcordable)

Students will be evaluated by assessing whether they displayed evidence of the content standards through their final Pages product and oral presentation
