Home Reading

All students should be reading at home on a regular basis. Throughout the year, students will be required to construct projects based on the novels read at home. Specific guidelines for these projects will be passed out in class. Examples of these projects will be modeled in the classroom and are to be completed independently at home.

Strive for 25

Students are required to read 25 books by June 2006. Books that were read over the summer can be counted towards this NYS requirement. Students will keep a record of the books read for their ELA Portfolios.

Welcome to Mr. Farrar’s Fourth Grade Class

Our specials are scheduled from 9:45 to 10:25 each day. We have Phys. Ed. and Art twice a week and Music once. Our lunch is from 11:44 to 12:16 p.m. Our snack time is at 10:30 a.m. All snacks must be nutritious and healthy.

Math

The Lancaster School District has adopted the Everyday Mathematics Program. This program emphasizes applying mathematical computation skills to real life situations. To enhance the development of basic skills and concepts, students regularly revisit previously learned concepts and repeatedly practice skills encountered earlier. The students have numerous opportunities to participate in activities that reinforce the mathematical concepts. The students should practice basic math facts on a daily basis at home.

Social Studies

The Social Studies curriculum in fourth grade concentrates on New York State: Geography, Native Americans, Explorers, Erie Canal, and the American Revolution.

Science

The Science Program is a hands-on experience based on discovering some of the natural wonders of our world. We have started off the school year studying Crayfish. Other units cover Plants, Electricity, and Powders and Crystals.

Reading Language Arts

Literature and writing are the keys to knowledge and expression. Through reading leveled books and trade books along with writing personal responses and journal entries, students will interpret and understand an author’s point of view and purpose. Students will continue to strengthen their comprehension skills by applying reading strategies modeled throughout reading instruction. Students will express their thoughts and ideas through the writing process.

Birthdays and Parties

We do celebrate birthdays in the classroom so feel free to send in birthday treats! No cakes please. We also recognize the following celebrations: Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and Easter. If you have a celebration that you would like to be recognized in our classroom, please feel free to write your child’s teacher.
