SPORTS’ DAY: We all enjoyed a wonderful morning of sport on Thursday. The sun shone and for once we were not worried about the rain. All the children did their very best in every race and should be proud of themselves. Congratulations to St Paul’s who were the final winners, although this was one of the tightest competitions that I can remember. It was lovely to see so many parents, family and friends supporting the children so enthusiastically. A big thank you to Mrs Holden and Mrs Anthony, as well as the Junior staff team for organising this successful event.

SUNNY DAYS: We ask that children wear sun hats to protect them in the lovely sunshine we are now experiencing. Please apply sun creamto areas such as: arms, legs and back of necks before the children come to school. Children may wear sunglasses, but they are not allowed to play games or run whilst wearing them.

MRS KIRWAN: After a long and happy teaching career, Mrs Kirwan is to take early retirement from the profession. She wishes to thank the school community for the manyfulfilling years she has spent here and says that she feels privileged to have been able to work at our school for so many years. She will miss each and every one of her pupils.

We will also miss Mrs Kirwan very much. She joined our school in 1998 and has taught throughout the Juniors. More recently, Mrs Kirwan has been part time, teaching, particularly French, in many classes. Mrs Kirwan has touched the lives of many children through the years. Her commitment and dedication to the children and our school has been immense and she should be very proud of all that she has achieved. Although Mrs Kirwan has now retired from the school, we will be inviting her back to say a proper farewell and thank you. If you would like to contribute to a gift for her, from the school community, please send your contribution into the school office clearly marked with her name.

BABY NEWS: Congratulations to Chinedum and the Ozoemene family on the birth of his baby sister on Monday.

ASSEMBLIES: This week class3b told us all about the importance of the Rainforest to the Earth. Thank you to Mrs Gallagher, Miss Scahill and the children for preparing the assembly. Next week we look forward to class Ra’s assembly at 9.15am and Class 4a’s assembly at 2.45pm.

CHICKS: We were pleased to welcome 14 eggs from the Happy Chick Company on Monday into Reception. On Tuesday morning, our first egg began to hatch and we are now the proud co-parents of 14 baby chicks (7 girls, 7 boys). The Reception children will be looking after the chicks until next Thursday, and we are sure that many other children, in the school, will want to visit them, too.

BOBBY BEAR POLICE VISIT: Reception, Year 1 & Year 2 were introduced to Bobby Bear this week who reminded themof the three rules about strangers:

  • Never speak to strangers
  • Never go with strangers
  • Never take things from strangers

It is important that our children, throughout the school, know and remember these rules as well as who they can go to if they need help.

GANTS HILL PARTNERSHIP:

  • ANNUAL ARTS FESTIVAL: Throughout the year, we work very closely in partnership with Gearies Primary, Fullwood Primary, Cranbrook Primary and Highlands. One of our annual events is a celebration evening of song and dance. Representing our school this year was a group of children who learn Irish Dancing (Ages 5 to 11). They were a sight to behold in their lovely costumes and they danced beautifully. During the evening we also enjoyed Bollywood dancing, sitar playing and singing. Thank you to Ms McGuire, Mrs Higgins, as well as Mrs Holden for ensuring that our children were so well prepared. Congratulations, of course, to the children, I was very proud of you.
  • NETBALL NEWS: On Wednesday 11th June a squad of nine Year 5 and Year 6 girls took part in a partnership netball rally with: Fullwood, Gearies, Cranbrook, Christchurch and Highlands. The girls played exceptionally well winning all their matches: 5 -0, 5-0, 7-0, 6-0, 9-0 and so they were the winning team! Congratulations to all the girls: Ninikanwa, Ore, Theanna, Daniela, Melissa, Ewa, Carissa, Khristine and Saffron, not only for their playing skills but also for their excellent behaviour and sportsmanship. Thank you to Mrs Harris who escorted the girls on the day and who has trained the team along with Miss Leppard throughout the year.

This week, three Year 5 girls also took part in the Redbridge Netball trials. Well done to Shauna, Khristine and Carissa for attending, and congratulations to Carissa who got through to the second stage of trials.
