From the President's Pen

Justone week after leaving hospital (2 weeks after the actual open heart surgery), Phil Harding asked to be picked up so that he could attend the Rotary meeting. That is either dedication to Rotary to the Nth degree, or the food was so bad in hospital that Phil needed a great Naval Military & Airforce brekky! Seriously, it was great to see Phil up and about so quickly and he was obviously feeling a lot better after his heart valve replacement.
We also welcomed back Angus Tuck after his five weektour to South America for his business (SACE), as well as visiting the Rotary Club of Bogota Suba to get the latest update on our Colombian Education Scholarships Program. Since his visit, Angus has received an email from Gabriel stating
"Dear Angus and Dear Helen:
I send you my special greetings and the gratitudeof our Club for your visit, your comments and your strongspirit of solidarity.
Many thanks for your important e-mail andphotos. Congratulations for your visit to Machu Pichu, one of the most interestingnatural and historical places in the world.
Many thanks for your comments tothe members of your Club about your visit to our Club, especially your meeting with the students in Miramar. Lunch was only an opportunity to meet the Members of my Club, but I am happy that you and Helen enjoyed it. Your comments concerning the collaboration of your Committee, are a fantastic news. We have the confidence that other Rotary Clubs will be interested to integrate a group of special solidarity sponsors to help more students interested to study technical or technological studies, the most important possibility for a young man or a young woman without resources, to study, to have a better future, to help his or her family and contribute to ameliorate the conditions of life of their Community of Miramar.
We will have ten students in December, five of them are new students. As you remember, there were three students absent in the meetingin your visit. We have US$300 waiting for giving it tothree students...Dear Angus, of course, excuse me, but as I always say, you are our Godfather in Australia and in the World!!!
Best regards to Helen and to all the Members of the Rotary Clubof Adelaide Light.
Sincerely, Gabriel"
President Yvette read out a letter of congratulations from Premier Jay Weatherill for gaining our award at the Association of Service Club Organisations for the Colombian project. Now that Angus has returned from his business trip, he will start to contact other Rotary Clubs to see if they will support additional students in Colombia. Last year, the Rotary Club of Adelaide generously donated $1000 to the project, and this year we will seek support from other clubs who have shown interest in the past.
The End Polio Now Cocktail Party is just one week away, and we have Joe Morelli and Blackwell Funerals to thank for funding the JC Jazz trio who will be entertaining us on the night. Our own Rob McLennan will use his dulcet tones to auction off donated goods, and we have several business and people to thank (see list in the story below). Come along for a night of great food, excellent wines, music and fun in the lovely Horizon's Lounge filled with overstuffed leather chesterfields everywhere and the view over the sea with the lovely setting sun!
Keep the date of 14 December free so that you can volunteer at the Carols by Candlelight event. See Rohan for details; and on 1 February we will be providing a BBQ (with the help of the RC of Salisbury) to Rotaractors from around Australia for their annual games. More detailslater.
The rest of the meeting was a Club Committee meeting and some wonderful brainstorming occurred and will be followed up by the Directors.
BOOK TODAY - "End Polio Now" Cocktail Party Fundraiser - Thursday 13 November 2014
Posted by Yvette Reade on Nov 06, 2014

Australia is definitely the lucky country. We have not had a case of Polio since 1986, but unfortunately, the wild polio virus is still active in other parts of the world. We have the means to eradicate this debilitating disease that attacks young children. We have vaccines that provide immunity for life - but we need to administer this to children in war-affected areas and remote places. This takes funds - and the Rotary Club of Adelaide Light is doing its bit to raise funds for this international project. October 24 was World Polio Day and to commemorate it, we are holding a Cocktail Party Fundraiser - please see details and book your place to help eradicate polio from our world.
Where: Stamford Grand's Horizon'sCocktail Lounge, Moseley Square, Glenelg, SA.
When: Thursday 13 November from 7.30pm-9.30pm
Details: Food and drinks supplied, entertainment, auction. Lovelyvenue with sea views and comfortableleather couches.
Bookings and payment by 3 November essentialvia (small booking fee applies). The website also allows you to make a donation as well or instead if you can't attend.
About Polio: Although polio cases are down 99% worldwide from 350,000 cases in 1988 to 201 cases in September 2014 — an all-time low —our work is still not finished. Lack of funding will decrease immunization rates in polio-affected countries. Until polio is eradicated everywhere, no unvaccinated child is safe anywhere. If polio rebounds, more than 200,000 children worldwide could be paralysed each year within a decade.
Rotary and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have extended their partnership during the critical endgame phase of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. From 2013 to 2018, every US dollar Rotary commits to polio eradication will instantly become three dollars, thanks to a 2-to 1 match by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Join Rotary in the final push to end polio and help make history today.
Only three countries remain polio-endemic - Pakistan, Nigeria and Afghanistan; the remaining 1% of polio cases are the most difficult to prevent because the wild virus persists in the hardest-to- reach areas.
Rotary's world-wide challenge is to raise funds for the 2013-18 Polio Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan (polioeradication.org) • Estimated cost: US$5.5 billion • Funding commitments: US$4 billion• Funding gap (if commitments are met): US$1.5 billion
We invite you to enjoy our Cocktail evening so that you can help the Rotary Club of Adelaide Light raise funds for this much needed cause - that of eradicating Polio from the face of the Earth.
With thanks to the companies and peoplewho are supporting our End Polio Now fundraiser: Stamford Grand; Emma Hack Galleries; Blackwell Funerals; Elder Fine Art; Red Ochre Designs; RSM Bird Cameron; Dean Sullivan; Snooze Mile End

Are you a blood donor? Have you ever wanted to be?
Now is the time!
The Adelaide City Rotaract Club have launched a blood donation drive to help save the lives of hundreds of Australians. Our goal is to donate 25 litres of blood before Christmas. This means we need 50 donors to donate the standard half a litre of blood, but we can’t do it alone. We need the help of Rotarians, friends, family and colleagues to help us reach this goal!
To get us started, we are offering the first non-ACRC member to donate under our Club Red name, a free meal at our next general meeting. To win, just take a picture of yourself donating blood and send it to.
Contributing is easy, just make an appointment with any blooddonation centre by calling 13 95 96 and ask them to add yourdonation to the Adelaide City Rotaract Club’s Club Red tally. If you are already a donor, you can join our group online at

Condom use on an aircraft
A man and a woman are seated next to each other on a flight.
They start eyeing each other, and both realize they want to do the same thing.
He slips a condom out of his pocket, and she looks delighted.
Rear toilet? He suggests. Five minutes, she agrees and goes off.
He waits five minutes, then goes and slips in there with her.
Right, get that condom on, she says.
Soon, they are both sighing with pleasure.
But a sharp eyed stewardess has noticed them, and realized what they are up to, So, she humiliates them by making an announcement over the PA system.
"To the lady and gentleman in the rear toilet, we know what you are doing, and it is expressly forbidden by airline regulations".
"Now, please put those cigarettes out and take the condom off the smoke detector."
And what were you thinking? I worry about you sometimes!
